brake knock question

Why, while idling at a stop light, when I press the brake pedal ALMOST all of the way down, there is a serious 'knock, knock, knock' in the brake pedal going along with the speed of the engine. If I press it in a little farther or a little less, it goes away. I am assuming that it is in tune with the speed of the engine because of the vacume booster? Is something broken here? Do I need to be concerned? The engine does not knock itself in any way.

Any opinions helpful. Thanks!
