Help Identifying Recaro Seats (IS.N, IS.LS?)

Recommended Posts

I’ve spent hours scouring the internet trying to identify what model and age of Recaro seats I have and I’m still unsure. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it. I received these Recaro seats a couple of years ago along with a 1972 BMW 2002 project. They appear most similar to the Recaro Idealsitz N, but I haven’t been able to find any that have the same reclining knob (shape and Recaro label). They also look similar to the Recaro Idealsitz LS, but these do not have the circular knob located on the upper side of the seat. It’s also been nearly impossible to find any examples that have half vinyl and half fabric where the separation between the two is in the middle of the bolsters (opposed to the commonly seen fabric confined to the seat and back. I’m curious if the upholstery ever came like this from the factory or if it’s likely been reupholstered? Thank you in advance for any insights and advice!

Thanks for the link SydneyTii, there is some good info in that thread. I came across that same Recaro "L Modular System" brochure in another 2002FAQ thread  a couple days ago while digging around and that is what helped me rule out my seats being LS* and LX* variations and pushed me towards being Idealsitz, which if I'm understanding correctly are earlier period seats, pre-modular.

You can see when side by side with the brochure examples that the bolster profiles on my seats don't quite match up with any of the options.

Anyone else have expertise they could offer? The closest example I've found is Idealsitz N, but don't feel extremely confident and want to list these and provide accurate information for prospective buyers.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
