2002 Aluminum Cylinder Head Alloy

Mike,

Checking the grain structure is an option, however, I do not think it will tell you the percentage of the elements in the alloy.  I know of a couple ways to find the percentages; first, take a sample to a lab with a scanning electron microscope or second, take the head to a lab with an x-ray florescence alloy analyzer.  Both methods can provide a percentage of elements in the alloy.  Some x-ray florescence alloy analyzer is portable, so you do not need to cut off a sample.

Regards,

Roger

M20 Heads were either of these depending when and where they were cast

Al Si 6 Cu 4

Al Si 8 Cu 4

Al Si 6 Cu 3

Al Si 10 Cu 2

Rumours say that M10 Heads might be
Al Si 9 Cu 3

I think they all can take the same heat treatment

Being versed in the phillips 300 and 600 em's ( it is a long story) I would vote for x-ray Fluorescence.

Evaluate which hand held XRF analyzer is right for you. Compare Niton analyzers and features online.

I shudder to think of how many Canuck pesos I would need to lay out in order to have one in my tool chest.

I rarely join forms. The participants here have on the whole been exceedingly helpful. If you have or are involved with a fast vintage car. Wonderful be proud of your work and accomplishments. Much of what I did in my 46 year Professional career as an engine and cylinder head specialist is now Vintage. This included Winston Cup, CART/Indy Car, IMSA GTP (Class C in Europe), F-5000, etc., etc., etc.

Thank you to the members who answered my cylinder heads material question. What I learned from the form members was passed on to the Metallurgist who assisted us with the vintage Porsche head project which will be available next year.
