I think it's a good sign that the paint is over 4 yrs old and there don't appear to be any rust bubbles in the paint.

"Rust is present on the floors" could mean some sheet metal work for sure. My guess is that it'll go between $12-15k

It all depends on the price.

The seller seems to be very forthcoming, there is a detailed independent analysis.  The only two serious issues are that the steering box has no adjustment left (good replacements are tricky to find and getting pricey) and the pedal box is perforated (same).  If AC is important to you, repair could get expensive as well.

BAT usually fetches more than what I feel these cars are worth.  John's estimate of 12-15 is probably close to the car's actual value, but with their policy of extending auctions by two minutes every time there is a better bid, it could go higher.  And whether it's realistic or not, Hagerty values a 76 02 in good condition at over 23K.

From what I can see, this car is somewhere between fair and good.

You called it, @Teej  I thought 15 would be high, but the bidding continues getting bumped every couple minutes past reasonable. $18k and counting. ... sold for $21,250.

@johnq22, I have  a love/hate relationship with that site.

They get some really cool cars and often have informed comments, but it seems to me they are largely responsible for driving prices of semi-collectibles into the stratosphere.

I don't envy the entry level guys who want something they can enjoy and wrench on without going into hock or ruining their marriages.

I thought I overpaid for my 02 4 years ago......but at this point it's done almost as well as my portfolio, and I sure didn't intend for it to be an investment.

@astrakhan, this is always the way on BAT.  It looks like a smokin' deal until the last hour or so and then the big guns come out.  I wish your friend luck, but these days it's hard to find a decent shell for that price.

100% agree @Teej. I watch it and sometimes comment, but unfortunately, I'm not likely to buy a car on it.  Sell, one maybe ?
I WAS in the market for a 2002 [update: thanks to those who've reached out! I bought a '76 on 5/11 that's more of a driver than a project; Found on craigslist, paid $2k less than this green one and I believe I got a bit more car.-], but I'm scrounging FB Marketplace, craigslist, any anywhere else I can find. I'm open to a basket case for the right price, so what I'm looking for won't be there anyway.

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

    BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
