I have wondered about this also, currently my best theory is it will make it easier for you to close window since you screw the tension to the spring? Might be totally off here.

I think it's mostly cosmetic, as it'll work without the springs.  The springs push/hold the panel off the metal door & cover the handle shafts.

Will be doing this during the week most likely. I'm using 3mm Sintra which is foamed or expanded PVC ($20 per 24x48)

If it fails I'll try the 3/16 plywood option ($20 per 48x48)

This makes a lot of sense. I recall on some other vehicles I've had that there was a plastic disk that pressed against the back of the door card around the window crank shafts. The spring pressed against the back of the disk to hold the disk against the card. This closed the gap between the handle and the card - as you said.
