Subframe painted por15

Well I finished the blasting and the painting of the front subframe last night. Here is a picture of the nice clean parts before I put it all back together. Heading to Blaine to go get my bushings and oversized head gasket. Should be interesting trying to get these bushings in. I have a feeling there's going to be a lot of cussing. My uncle recommended using oils oil to lubricate the bushings after I warm them up in hot water.

I'm going to give it a shot. I mean why not...last night I removed the pilot bearing by stuffing a peanut butter sandwich into the hole and pounding it out.

Snorkel cleaned up. I'm may hit it with some paint and try and push the little dent out of it. 7751e3707d6709a258fd7ff3afe545b5.jpg

I shimmed the oil pump with a two .003 shims and now that I have it all together I'm second guessing my decision. The chain has little to no play so I think I'll drop it to 1 - .001 shim on the pump side and a .003 shim on the block side to give it more slack. First I'll double check my torque.

Looking shiny! I suspect there's a reason why BMW made shims that can only fit across both oil pump mounts - I wouldn't raise one side more than the other. You'll find the right height with the thinner shims.

Here's a compete how to on the bush installation - will save you hours of swearing:

I tried to make a device that would push the bushings through but it didn't work and I don't want to wreck the bushings. I stepped away from the bushings job and decided to complete some other work instead. Ended up stacking a .3 and a .1 shim on the oil pump then got the head on ect..

I think I'll repaint the pulleys black. Not diggin' the grey. Oil pan is going to get repainted black as well.

  • 4 months later...

Completed the front subframe assembly.

I didn't plan on putting it back into the car tonight but just as I shot this pic my wife walked into the garage and asked if I needed a hand.

Well just so happens I'm thinking about how the @$!$@ I'm going to get this back in.

Well...she suggests using the engine hoist. I followed with a "what are you talking about?"

Anyway...After we wrestled it under the car and a failed attempt at jacking the assembly into position I came up with a great idea. "Let's use the engine hoist!" we threw some thick straps that the movers left behind around the centre of the subframe and pulled it up with the hoist.

Worked like a charm.

I would of taken more pics but didn't think these unorthodox methods should be documented.
