Removing air conditioner compressor

I'm stripping the a/c crap from my 76. Looking at the front of the engine there is as follows:

1. Pulley on the water pump, belted to alternator.

2. Pulley directly below water pump that is belted to the water pump, and the a/c compressor.

3. a/c compressor (which I'm removing!)

What I need to know is whether or not the bottom pulley (#2) is an idler pulley that does nothing, or if it runs the oil pump or serves any other important purpose. If it does, I'll need a shorter belt to run it. If not....off with the compressor and the bottom belt. First person to respond recieves an empty box that a BRAND NEW ball joint came in.

Maybe I'm misreading you, but your water pump is belted only to the alternator? What happened to the crank pulley, which drives everything?

I removed the A/C crap from my '74 a while ago. From what I remember, the A/C crank pulley has a second belt channel, where the standard crank pulley has only one. When you've removed the A/C entirely, you wind up with a single belt going from the crank pulley, over the water pump, and over the alternator. I don't recall an idler pulley on my 2002, but there may have been one to snug up the A/C belt.

You can replace that heavy A/C crank pulley with a smaller standard one.

bad, the bearing inside is a very common one (a 6202 or 6203, I believe) easily found and easily replaced. This is the standard setup found on both Behr and Frigiking A/C setups on 2002s. Mine went bad years ago and replacement took about 30 minutes...

and the other channel is for belt to A/C. Simply remove belt to A/C and, as posted above, change crank pulley if you want less bulk/weight.

I have a Friking AC. How did you go about removing it? Are ther just four bolts on one side closest to the oilpan?
