ignition question

I have finally got the brakes working the engine flushed and my 02 is close to running again, first time in years. I tried to start her yesterday but no spark. I ran a peice of wire from the positive on the battery to the positive on the coil, stil no spark. What would be the next step to trouble shooting from here. What should the risistance across the coil be. this is probably a good time to ask, is it worth investing in a good multimeter or will a cheapy suffice for the home garage?

cheers
