Project 8: Body

Yeah, she needs a LOT more work in this area. My intention was to get rid of some of the really bad areas I could easily reach and slow down the rest. Also, the paint was beyond shot. So I took off everything that I could think if, ripped into her with various tools, then taped her up.

This was all well and good; but then I decided since it was just a temp fix I’d simply use spray paint primer till I could really do the job correct. I went through so many cans and ended with such a half-assed result that I really wish I’d just gotten a gun and sprayed her. Oh well, live and learn.

Some high points though:

Accidently came up with the basic paint scheme I’m going to go with in the end. Yes, she will be gray with a black stripe, and a few tweaks, when done. I did it as a joke and find I love it.

Got rid of the body molding. I like the shaved look better and will be filling in the holes when I do the body work.

Love how the grill turned out with the lacquer I used.

Can’t wait to see how the new fiberglass bumpers and wanna-be Talbot mirrors look.

Project 9: Electrical

Do the ‘02’s need to have things grounded? Naw, over-rated.

A simple list of things I’ve done:

New headlights (will probably go back to the clears, the yellow ones are fun, but maybe too garish even for me)

Front turns refurbished; inside section of the quarters where they sit painted with reflective paint, all grounds fixed.

Rear lights refurb’ed; painted with reflective paint, best lenses of 3 sets used, all connections cleaned, grounds fixed.

Side markers (I like ‘em) refurb’ed and fixed.

New license plate lights (now that I’ve seen Steve’s I want the Euro ones), and DAMN they were spendy.

New bulbs in everything.

New battery.

New cables and straps.

Master cutoff.

Installed a buss.

New ignition switch, grounds fixed.

All new fuses.

Issues still outstanding:

Fuel gauge is inconsistent (prob a ground).

Turn signals don’t switch off when done turning (think there is a tab that didn’t get put back in correctly).

Horn doesn’t work.

Electrical windows don’t work (will be better when I install the motors…)

Interior light stays on (need to get the door bumper for the switch).

Project 10: Power, Drag and Weight

In a ground vehicle there are three forces working; power, drag, and weight (if you go REALLY fast lift does come into play). So my plan is to attack all of these. To that end I have moderately upgraded the power, reduced quite a bit of drag, and put her on Jenny Craig’s.

Power:

Weber 32/38 (will be adding a cold air intake after battery relocation)

IE headers (I believe)

Ansa exhaust

Tii Mechanical Dist

Pertronix

Crane Fireball (going in soon)

8mm Wires

Opened gap (soon)

Drag:

Fixed brakes

Fixed wheel bearings

Removing fan (soon)

3.91 diff

Weight:

Removed bumpers (putting fiberglass ones on)

Removed ‘extra’ jack

Replaced stock seats with Recaros

Panasport rims (LOVE these)

Removed AC (still have inner parts to get rid of)

41X starter installed (despite what I’ve read this seems to crank less than my stock one, but still starts her fine, and weighs a lot less)

Battery relo soon… or aviation batteries under rear seat

Project 11: Stereo

Yes the engine sounds nice (now that a lot of my weird noises are gone) but I like to have a decent stereo. You don’t want to add speakers? Ok, don’t.

For me though…

Decent JVC head (in)

Infinity 6x9’s in the back shelf (soon)

Infinity 6.5’s in the front in kicks (soon)

JL Amp in trunk (soon)

Sub under rear seat (maybe)

Had to take some time off last summer and this spring for a couple fights and some other things, but have been plugging away pretty steady. Got to hook up with a bunch of people last weekend over at Blunttech for a great drive around the lake, tons of fun.

I'll update (with better pictures) as I continue to fix her.

Car looks good!

Can you give me a little info on the lip? I like how it looks.

Thanks!

The spoiler? It came with the car so I don't know anything about it, sorry.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
