Early stocking stuffer: 72tii engine # 2762332

I just took delivery of a tii engine today purchased from Mike Deery in CT and "The Transporter" Marshall Lytle in his F250 4x4 truck returning from his Thanksgiving trip to see relatives. I purchased this engine from Mike as a spare and hope to slowly rebuild it back to better than new.

I owe a big thanks to both Marshall and Janice Lytle for having an overweight passenger on their return trip from CT.

Here are some pictures from today.

Had some fun in the chilly garage today and I now smell like PBlaster.

Removed the complete A/C compressor w/bracket and idler pulley: 27 lbs.

Removed the fuel injection runners, plenum, intake manifold and throttle body: 17.3 lbs.

Weighed the 228mm flywheel: 17 lbs.

Clutch disk: 3 lbs.

Pressure plate: 11 lbs.

Starter with tii bracket and ground wire: 17 lbs.

Having trouble removing the small 10mm (wrench size) bolt that holds the water pipe to the block, the final (2) 12mm (wrench size) exhaust manifold nuts and the front 13mm (wrench) alternator bolt. Guess I need to invest in a propane torch or butane lighter for applying heat.

Wrench size for cap bolts on fuel injectors: 14mm

Thermo-time switch, temperature switch and Injectors: 19 mm

A/c idler pulley: 22 mm

Here are a few pictures with some unwanted food

Jim, looks like a "fun" project. The first thing that came to mind was "boat anchor?" I forget how badly things get worked on the east coast with rust and what not. Funny as well, the first pic or two I was thinking how nice it was that the TB was taped over along with a few other "openings".....then I came to the image with all the "debris" in the intake ports - was thinking, was he trying to keep whatever was inside in or keep out. Made me think of the Chasing Classic Cars I saw last week where they fired up a Dino 246gt that had been sitting for years - all sorts of debris came flying out of the exhausts (mouse nests).... pretty funny.

LOL Mark -

I think the engine has been thru at least (2) owners before I bought it (NY and CT). Still trying to track down their PO and what happened to the car itself (most likely scrapped). I didn't see the VIN in the tii registry (darn).

The vertical shaft in the throttle body moves freely but the butterfly is stuck. I'm going to soak the entire thing.

I was able to free up the KF pump linkage - it moves pretty good now.

There is a lot of sealant along the bottom of the upper timing cover. It appears the head gasket was done at one point. Most of the hose clamps on the coolant lines are USA ones - not the factory type.

The rocker arm adjustment cams are all rotating in an upward direction which is a good sign.

I'll pull the KF pump, oil pan and cylinder head this weekend. The engine turns about 1/2 way round easily then stops, so I'm sure there is either a blockage in the combustion chamber or worse.

how did you get the engine rotated vertical. was a bear to try to move when we mounted it. have you pulled the spark plugs? try spraying some wd40 or marvel mysery oil in the cyls, let it soak and then turn over.

LOL I had to get a neighbor to put the pin back in after I rotated the engine. The holes wouldn't line up even after I used a round chisel to pry the engine backwards. I lifted the front of the engine while he put the pin in and hit it with a hammer. PITA.

The plugs all came out easily - they weren't that tight. Used my Shop Vac to suck out the bird seed. Will spray the cylinders with a good dose of WD-40 tomorrow.

Removed quite a few things from the engine today, including the small rusty bolt holding the water pipe. Unfortunately, the front alternator bolt snapped from the timing cover. Another bolt securing the upper plastic cover snapped.

Looks like the last time the water pump was replaced was sometime in the '80's. Water pump casting is from 1984.

Considering the age and condition of the engine, I was amazed that the rear water outlet pipe came off pretty easily using a large crescent wrench

pics1232010021.jpg

THE OLD OIL INSIDE THIS ENGINE REALLY STINKS - especially inside the distributor housing and the head bolt cavities.

Peering down into the cylinder head and block water jackets, it looks pretty good.

dang jim, you are going to town on that engine! you win for ugliest water pump ever....

and once it is in a million pieces...then what? ;-)

Hey, the water pump turns - there's lots of gelled up muck in there. Found some silicone globs in the head coolant passages.

May need to buy more plastic bins and start stacking them ;-0. Had to get more ziplock bags from Costco.

New exhaust arrived yesterday for the VW. Need to get back to that engine now that I have the neat lift table (engine off the floor now).

need a puller for the pulley?

I have a three-jaw puller - need an impact for the 30mm bolt. I have a thin-wall socket that fits (same as tranny output shaft nut).

Can I borrow your cordless impact tomorrow?
