Project Derby!

So today was a good day.

I jacked up the car for the first time crawled underneath and was very pleased with the fact that as advertised the car is structurally sound.

As for all the mechanics ...TBD

I took some pictures (below) so I can study some of the various pieces and do a "where's Waldo" on what's there and what's not there and what needs to be repaired and/or replaced.

i have have a slightly used suspension on my other 2002 (tie rods ball joints etc.)   I plan to use a lot of those parts on this car.

Couple things I noticed right away one of the tire rods is hanging on by a thread!  Guibo is dry rotting. The transmission is leaking but I plan to swap that out with a five speed anyway.

figuring out the brake booster situation and the master and slave will be something to research tonight.

specifically

can I use my rebuilt pedal box from my 2002?

can I swap in my rebuilt brake booster from my 71 2002?

if I d a five speed swap from my e21 what does that do to my current set up?

I have lots lots of reading to do on the FAQ.   Wish me luck!

Thanks - derby was the original color.  Seems it had a very thorough priming and paint job at some point.  Verified with BMW as well. Can't wait to get to the point where I'm putting that color back on the car.

That center support bearing is scary looking!

You aren't  kidding! The rubber inside seems to be dry rotting along with the two Guibos.  I drove it about three blocks from my apartment to a nearby storage garage.  And there is some high-pitched metal screeching when I put the car in gear. Like a metal cutting lathe.

i won't drive it again until this is fixed.
