Zero Paints which are available in the US at Hobby World USA makes color matched paints supplied by Lechter in Europe.  They started out with getting racing colors right and have gone into production cars.  With the Hasegawa 2002, they brought out 1970's paints.  These are a 2 stage paint.  The color goes on matt and requires a clear coat.  Also, the paint is 'hot' so the model has to be primed to protect the plastic.  I will do a kit review of the various kits:  2002ti which is a short bumper, 2002tii long bumper and turbo.  When I get these two built and i can combine these with an in-box review.   Note the Nevada car has the headliner painted white, so there is tape distorting the window openings.  I will likely make a faux headliner with band aid tape.

Below are 2 I am working on.  The long bumper car is in Malaga and has been clear coated.  The Nevada car has not as there are some blemishes to work out.  This will be built as a short bumper 2002.  The mini is a Revell 998 Cooper in sea foam blue.  For some reason, it took months for my order of paints to arrive.  It may have to do with the number I ordered, including Agave, Atlantic, Golf, and Baikal.

Thanks for that tip!  Except apparently they are backordered atm.  All but Fjord!

Since your models (presumably) won't be subjected to the same weather exposure as a real car, you could use a good quality oil-base enamel from a paint store (Sherwin-Williams, etc).  Most have a spectrographic matching machine so could match from a good quality photo, piece of car or a factory color chip chart.  Much less expensive than auto body paint, and properly thinned, it'll work just fine.  And much cheaper than the one oz bottles of model paint.

Lowes matched a 60s Florida license plate blue perfectly using a similar plate so I could repaint a rusted one.

Thank you for that suggestion!  I was thinking of getting color matches somehow, but I don't have any actual paint chips to match from...

Several of us on here are on Solidworks.

I've been thinking about a 3d scanner- really because I want to make glasses for my wife that fit her, but still think it would be fun.

A 3-d scanner would be awesome.  Do you already have a printer?

  4. In the same vein, I've actually been spending a lot more time in Blender trying to get an animated opening title sequence for a youtube project I am working on.  Anybody else mess with Blender?   I highly recommend updating to the 2.8 beta if you haven't already done so...

  5. Ok so maybe some of you remember that I was going to be re-painting some of my stash of Welly 1:24 2002ti models in all the various stock/original factory colors.  I was looking into getting actual automotive paints in the authentic paint codes but doing this would make the final models very very pricey indeed.  So what I was wondering was, for you scale modelers out there, are you aware of modeling paints (Tamiya, Testors, etc.) that are matches for any of the stock colors?  I figure any "black" is going to be close enough to a Schwarz 086 (I wanted to start with black to get my technique down), but what about the others?  I think Malaga would be next, followed by Chamonix (If I remember correctly from my previous post about this.)

Anyways, thanks if you can help! :)

Picture below is me messing with some fitment issues for wheel upgrades... ;)

  6. I had the same question, but only on a purely curiosity level before when I got a license for Solidworks through an industry contact.  I was so blown away by the power of the software and I was wondering if anyone had a SW model completed.  I love playing with Solidworks but I have a lot of other things to work on atm, I just can't devote the time to it like I would want to.  Please let me know if you find anything in terms of CAD files, Solidworks or not! :)

Konis are the ones that don’t have pressure uncompressing it. If you push them down, they stay down. The bilsteins are the one that do have gas uncompressing it (again, idk the proper names for all this stuff.)

If it doesn't push back at all, I think you have a dud.  Is there any oil on the outside or on the piston tube itself?  Did you buy them used?  These are the yellow adjustable Koni Sports, yah?

Whoops, yea I meant that the Koni’s are not pressurized gas like the Bilsteins where the gas extends them. I don’t know much about shocks(duh) so I’m not 100% sure of the condition but they seem to be alright, I still need to swap out the rears though, probably will today.

If you look at the label on the Konis, it will say "warning: gas pressure" or something like that.  Monotube shocks are high-pressure and twin-tube are low(er)-pressure.  If you compress them, they should uncompress.  How hard they push back depends on how worn out they are, or whether they have a twin-tube design (or both).  I forget whether Konis are monotube or twin.  Nice thing about both Konis and Bils are they are endlessly rebuildable with a lifetime warranty.

I just got and installed Koni sports, they are adjustable and are oil (not gas like the Bilsteins) and have heard good things, but I have not been able to use them really at all yet. hopefully, by the end of the week, I will have had driven it around enough to be able to tell you more about them. The ones I replaced were Bilstein HDs so we will see what difference it makes.

Koni sports are gas/oil just like Bilsteins.  The oil is what provides damping and the gas keeps the oil from foaming.

  10. I've experimented with a lot of exhaust setups on my black car (not an 02).  I have a helmholtz resonator bottle with two Vibrant resonators currently (one in rez position and one acting as a muffler).  I strongly support the idea of keeping a center resonator and enloudening (=P) the muffler end.  Please note that my original 02 center resonator had a restrictor plate in it which one would do well to eliminate, and use a straight-through rez like a Vibrant or similar.

    Hi Everyone!

I've been out of country until last month and just read this heartbreaking information about Rob.  He and his wife Robin were incredibly kind and generous with me when I contacted them numerous times in 2016 for help with my 1976 2002 restoration.  Rob would give his time and expertise without limit and I spent hours on the phone with him talking not only about bmw's but also about life, he gave wonderful advice and support in both.  Does anyone know how Robin is doing?  Has anyone been in touch with Rob?  I would like to contact him and send him my support.  Any information/updates would be very much appreciated.

You might be able to write him a letter if you send it to his inmate number at the SLO County Jail:

If you do write to him or otherwise get in touch tell him his FAQ friends are thinking of him. :)❤️
