  1. I would think, for the air gap, all you need to do is bend them open a little bit to fit.  Perhaps Bel-Metric could help you if you give them a call or emal.  Here is a link to theirs.  The have regular, long, wide but I'm not sure what that means....

I learned a new word, thanks Toby.

Upon further research it appears that these two words mean the same thing, i.e., to build or furnish with battlements.  I think both are appropriate based upon the ferocity of battle I am engaged in with these nuts and I must say that the castel / crenal lation has proven to be quite an effective defense!

They look like castle nuts in the picture. Why would they specify self locking nuts and show cotter pins. Maybe a mistake in the literature you are using and the past mechanic was correct?

The shop manual also shows self locking nuts.  The RealOEM site picture might look like castle nuts, however the BMW part numbers per the picture are all self locking nuts.  I guess it wouldn't hurt to put cotter pins in front of the self locking nuts, however, I've not seen that done...

Don’t wish to be pedantic but the OP is removing castle nuts and states the literature states self locking nuts.

Dont about the US but here in Blighty self locking nuts and nylocs are two different things.

I believe that's correct anywhere.  "Self locking" nuts do not have nylon, In think the threads do the "locking".

  5. In rebuilding my front suspension the nuts highlighted in the picture below that I am removing are all castle nuts.  According to RealOEM as well as the shop manual, they're all supposed to be self-locking nuts.  Is this just a case of a past mechanic installing the wrong nuts?  Perhaps he was confused since cotter pins are also there...

I would assume the same technique would apply.  These are typically cold formed, I think.

Likely the same cause (PO jacked up the car by the sway bar) 😮

Yeah ... I'm amazed by some of the lazy or ignorant past work I've discovered on this car 😂  Making sure its all done right now by doing it myself!

I'm assuming you are asking about what I call the control arm (tension strut per BMW)?  I have straightened several of these successfully.  I did not use heat.  Rather, just very careful, judicious use of a press.  It is amazing the damage that the suspension components show evidence of from previous shops/owners and their reckless jack placement.

I tried to find a photo of one that I straightened.  I can find photos after (straight), but not of the original bends.

No, I am speaking of the sway bar (aka stabilizer bar) and I meant to include that photo (below).  You can see the slight bend outward on the driver side.  Or maybe the passenger side is bent slightly in??  I honestly don't know...

  8. Have started my front suspension rebuild.  So far through judicious use of mapp gas, wax and muscle I've managed to get the sway bar out and the thrust rod nuts loose.  Sway bar was a bear due to one bent link and rusty bolt sleeves.  Next up is loosening the nuts (24 mm?) which attach the control arms to the subframe.  Hard work on the ground but it's all I've got!

By the way, noticing a slight bend in my sway bar on the driver side, think I can bend this back?
