  1. I took the body down to primer, and then - recognizing my own limitations and lacking a spray booth - I took it over to All American Street Rods in Manassas. Owner - Jason Fils - took good care of me. Mike at AASR did the final fit and finish, and then they sent it out for paint.

I think Jason's painter does the best work of anyone that I have seen. This paint job really, really pops. I was a big fan of Kenny's shop at MasterCrafters in Rockville, but they went out of business. And now that I've seen the work of Jason's shop, I wouldn't go anywhere else. The paint is absolutely perfect.

  2. Before someone comments that the Roundies are not properly oriented, that was an intentional choice. The curvature demanded that we either do some fancy fiberglass work, or simply install the lights with a different orientation. Since life is short and since fiberglass tends to crack, we went for the simple solution of rotating them. We figure the Ferrari and Porsche guys will never know the difference.

Yes, the thing cranks, and yes, I will stock a full collection of Jesse Jane videos, and yes, I have a Roundel for the boot lid.

  3. Update - the Otis Trailer is FINISHED! Yippee! Scroll down ...

    (Original post) -

The Otis trailer first appeared in the Colorado paint thread. http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,368721/highlight,otis+trailer/

Yesterday, the Otis Trailer returned from the paint shop; sorry for the iPhone quality pictures and odd lighting, which makes the paint look strange in these pictures. But we think we finally nailed the paint color. So last night, we hooked up the stereo. The lone remaining chores: (1) Install the top and gas shocks, (2) install the spare tire, (3) polish the wheels, (4) cover the six-pack doors (the wooden things in the pictures) in black leather, (5) test drive for proper tracking, and (6) tag and title. Whereupon, fun tailgating times await ... JohnInVA: no more grey trailer, therefore no more coffin jokes!

I plan to take the Otis Trailer to the Great Falls, VA, Cars and Coffee - when it's finished, that is - for the maiden voyage. Because that occurs on Saturday Mornings, we probably will show cartoons, or Stooges reruns, on the video monitors. More adult video content, we will reserve for Otisland events.

  4. Two friends (one owns an M3, the other owns a "72 911) told me about Cars and Coffee, the early (6:30 AM) Saturday morning get-together in Great Falls, VA. And so Otis and I rose early and motored on over.

What an amazing event. Everything from a Model T to just about every Italian Supercar you could imagine. Nice people, relaxed atmosphere, and Illy coffee.

I think I'll go again. Here are two pictures that I snapped at about 7:15 AM, at which time the parking lot was already full. Lots of Cobra replicars, lots of Vettes, a few hot rods (including a blown T-bucket), several Lambos, a Pantera, and more Ferrarri's than you could shake a stick at. Otis is the third car from the left, in the first photo.

Lots of YouTube videos are available. Here's some car porn from past events.

  5. It's a rat rod. The paint is supposed to be that way - if not worse (actually, that paint is a bit too fancy for a rat rod). As the driver says in the video, "It's a Euro - people don't accept Euros in the rat rod community - but we're going to change that."

I have some friends with rat rods (all U.S. iron - no Euros). Their total build spend equals or exceeds some of the finest street rods. It's a look, not for everyone; but I can appreciate what the rat rodders are trying to do.

Speaking of rat rods, I wonder how much Wegweiser would want for the F-Bomb ... (the ultimate rat rod).

Update - Kenny of MasterCrafters finally gave up the independent-owner thing and sold his shop to AutoBody Dimensions, an outfit that focuses on insurance work. Kenny will still be around, fixing cars, but I doubt that we'll be able to get AutoBody Dimensions to one-off our specialty projects. Too bad - several local 02s were painted in MasterCrafter's bay, including Otis - who came out yellow at first, even using the original paint codes and a color gun (the code gun that Finishmasters uses to determine the right mix, taking fade, etc. into account).

If you look on the underside of Otis' hood, you'll see the yellow version of Colorado paint. The top side, we fixed - but the underside we left yellow. Why? Because it looks cool that way.

  7. It can do this!

Are those Tribute Cheeks? That's nice. But my idea of a tribute car is something that pays tribute to something that I really, really like.

Stated differently, if you're going to pay tribute to something, this would be more like what I had in mind.
