  1. Hi Toby, Thanks for the tip. Do you mean the Bildon Motorsports that sells VW performance parts (http://www.bildon.com/) ? Thanks again! Timo
  2. Hi, Does anybody know where I can get a pair of front wheel spacers "off the shelf" so to speak? These spacers fit between the wheel and the hub. I am having some "new" rebuilt tii calipers installed and they won't clear the wheel like the old ones did. There already were spacers and tii calipers on the car however evidently the "new" tii calipers won't fit without rubbing the inner wheel. The facts: The car is running with 13" "turbo" style (aka old style "bottle tops") factory alloy wheels made by Mahle. tii front struts, '77 320i vented rotors, this is the old style classic big brake up grade using tii front struts. Please advise. Thanks in advance! Timo
  3. Greetings, Does anybody know of a good source of where I can get various European car VIN decals (and all kinds of decals) reproduced or at least restored? O searched the web and all I can find are some services for muscle cars and such. BTW: This is not for a BMW 2002 resto but for a Brand-X euro car resto job. Thanks in advance. Happy New Year, Tim
  4. Thanks everyone for the recommendations! Happy New Year!
  5. Greetings, What are some "recommended" San Jose, Ca (South SF Bay Area) BMW repair shops? I'm looking for a shop that really knows '02's but should also be well versed on latter model BMW's as well. Mainly this is for the heavier work that requires a lift. Thanks in advance and happy holidays. Tim
  6. Hi CD, Thanks for this info, as usual it is always very helpful. Do you adjust your valves when the engine is hot or cold? Or both? I've always heard from the "old school" of mechanics to adjust the valves when the engine is stone cold. Thanks again.
  7. Thanks guys. I'll go ahead and adjust the valves and see if this quiets the ticking down.
  8. Is it normal for an '02 engine to have an upper end "ticking" noise at idle? If so how much of this noise should there be? I completely understand that this is hard to answer over the internet and without hearing the car run. Does anyone remember from when their '02 was brand new how much of this noise their engines made? I have been told by a couple of mechanics that this valve train noise is completely normal. Thanks in advance.
  9. Greetings, Where can one find information on what the various spring rate color codes mean? I am referring to the three swipes of paint that came painted on each coil of the original factory installed '02 coil springs. Thanks in advance.
  10. Is it possible to delete old and outdated post on this forum? I am especially referring to post in the "for sale" section. For example if we locate and purchase the parts we are searching for then why not be able to delete the post rather leave it up and active on the board? Otherwise keep up the great work here! Thank goodness we have this forum to help keep our '02s roadworthy.
  11. Hi All, Thanks for the helpful advice and feedback. I have owned and carefuly maintained my '02 for over eight years and enjoy driving the heck out of it! For this reason alone the car should be driven in my opinion. It has only be brought in "on the hook" once during the past eight years and that was because an ignition (BTW: Pertronix pointless ignition) wire disconected and the car was in too dangerous an area on the road to make ithe repair. It was back on the road in less than a half an hour! Not a bad record for 8 years of ownership. I also know of a vintage car guy that claimes he got 175K miles on his '02 before the clutch needed to be replaced! For me there is no question about build quality on the '02. No the '02 is not my only car, I have two others, but I just enjoy driving it so much. I must confess that I am thinking about buying a car like a Subaru WRX or something else a little "off beat" so to speak. As good as the new Mini is, one thing for sure is that I can't see myself "trading in" my '02 and buying one. Just my opinion here. At any rate thanks again and take care.
  12. Greetings, I know that our beloved little cars should be driven and maintained on a regular basis to keep them healthy, but is it practical to drive an '02 on a daily basis? Especially since they are now at least 30 years old? Parts aren't too hard to find but they aren't always exactly just around the corner at the local parts house either. All thoughts and opinions are welcome.
  13. Greetings, Are the '02 differentials supposed to be dead quiet at "average" freeway speeds (60 to75mph)? How about an open diff vs an LSD? Which of the two are quieter assuming the car is going in a straight line? Is some whine considered normal? Thanks in advance.
  14. Thanks everyone for the information. IMHO this board is the one of the best resources available for 02ers!
  15. Greetings, Does anyone know if Maximilan(sp?) Importers is still in business? If so what is their web url? Thanks in advance.
  16. Hi all, I asked this question regarding the "new"style valve guide with a well known '02 specialist/tuner here in California and he suggested to go with the 320i valve guides and matching seals. This is what he uses. Thanks for the tips/advice! Have a good one.
  17. What are the "correct" or "new & improved" valve stem seals to use on the '02 engine and where can I get them? I understand that there are the valve stem seals that work and the ones that don't. Please advise. Thanks to all in advance. Happy '02ing!
  18. The saga is on-going. I have learned that the valve guides *were not* replaced but that the valve stem seals were. The mechanic claims that it could be the piston rings since the head was shaved and the compression has now increased so there is now blow by on de-acceleration because the piston rings are the "weakest part of the system..." My questions are: 1) Is this possible that the rings are so worn and now causing the smoking on de-acceleration since the head is now freshly re-done? 2) What are the "correct" or "new & improved"valve stem seals to use and where can I get them? Please Note: The engine did not smoke (either on acceleration or de-acceleration) before the head was worked on, now it smokes on long de-accelerations, for example when gearing down to exit a freeway. Then when you put your foot back on the gas-pedal to accelerate again a final puff of bluish smoke bellows out the tail pipe and then it all clears up and no more smoke until the next de-accelaration. The car runs "like a top" at all times too. All advice on this smoky problem is very welcome and happy '02ing!
  19. Thanks BC & Justin for the helpful feedback. At any rate I will let the shop take care of this issue. I didn't think running syn oil would cause this excessive smoking. The only main "side effect" that I've heard about syn-oil is that it gets by the engine and trans seals easier than dino-oil does. Thanks again and have a great rest of weekend. Timo
  20. Greetings, I *just* had a "valve/head job" completed on my '71 '02 and noticed that when driving the car home from the shop today that it smokes excessively out of the tail pipe a bluish/white smoke when de-accelerating. Then when I put my foot back into the throttle a larger puff of smoke briefly blows out the back and then it suddenly becomes *completely* smoke free. For me this is the classic sign on oil being sucked down the valve guides. The shop owner/chief mechanic ( a good guy) told me to bring the car back to him on Monday and he said that he will take care of it so I am confident that he will. The head work was sub-let to a machine shop. One interesting data point is that it appears that the mechanic put in a synthetic oil (purple in color) in the engine when I normally run regular 20-50w Castrol (dino oil) and have never had the car smoke like this, even before the valve job. The mechanic told me the brand of oil which he used and it began with an "s" but I forgot the name and will ask him on Monday. Here are my questions: 1)Could a cause of this smoking be the syn-oil and can this smoking be minimized by switching back to the dino oil? 2)Are there some kind of valve seals that fit in addition to the guides that can be installed to minimize this smoking? All advice and feed back is very welcome. Have a great weekend!
  21. I"d give my eye tooth for a Lancia Delta Integrali Evo 2...the Delta is *almost* impossible to import here *legally* to California, USA. This car along with the BMW e30 M3 would make a great pair of "modern classics" to own.
  22. Hi Norm, Great pics and a very interesting story about your Fulvia coupe's engine rebuild. You could not have picked a better Lancista to rebuild your engine IMHO. Why I can remember in my college days...some 20 years ago on a date with a girlfreind and suddenly I spotted a black Lancia Appia four door sedan across the street from the cafe I was in (in Berkeley) who do you think that Appia belonged to...? Tim
  23. Did anyone hear or know about a white or off white roundie '02 that was stacked up today at the intersection of Wolfe Road and El Camino Real in Sunnyvale, California? A friend of mine called me at work today on the phone to see if it was my car. He said the car was pretty much totaled the driver had evidently missed the turn. Sunnyvale's finest was on the scene collecting data. It's sad to think that there might be one less "02 in the world.
  24. Greetings, Here is a supposed NOS 1800/2000 VDO clock for sale on E-bay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-1800-2000-CLOCK-NOS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33673QQitemZ8032769710QQtcZphoto Shameless Plug: I've purchased parts from this E-bay seller in the past and although they are a bit pricy they sell excellent quality stuff and have fast shipping from the NL. John, Great job! I really like the look of Hugo's center console. It must be nice knowing the exact (or somewhat close to exact) oil pressure. For something like oil pressure and voltage, if you in fact have those gauges installed, do you still have the OEM "idiot lights" hooked up and working on the main cluster? Thanks and have a good one. Cheers, Tim
