How did you figure out they were Mahle?
curious,
t
"MAHLE" was cast in the piston skirt inside...
Sending you a PM.
-
Mac, sent ya one back...
-
Turns out, they are mahle pistons...but they're hammered. There's evidence of piston slap...
Rick, can you send me a few pictures of your flat tops please?
thx,
-
Thanks Art, PM replied, & a few US dollars sent! ?

Agreed with Andrew that they're in the 8.8-9 range.
I will hazard a guess they're aftermarket- the KS and Mahle pistons are
both usually stamped with size on the smooth, machined surface, and none of the ones I've seen have the
cast- in letters on them. Plus, unless you've wire- brushed them or something, that marking on the crowns would make me think
the engine's been apart a time or 2.
But that's just a guess- I've only seen a dozen or 2 engines apart...

Yeah Toby, I think your spot on, it looks like someone wire-wheeled the piston tops. There are pits in #4 and there's no lip at the top of the bore for all cylinders, making me think someone dingleberry-honed them and re-ringed the pistons and stuck them back in? I don't know....eventually I'll disassemble and get it inspected before committing to machine work. It's definitely been apart.

Got it, thx Rick. I need to do a lot more research and make some decisions about how I'd like to go about this build before I can commit to buying parts.

Wow! Excellent write-up zane71! I gotta camp there next time....sound like so much fun!

It's been 10 years since my last Historics...I'm rethinking leaving zero dark 30 on Friday. Traffic will probably be horrendous, eh? Maybe I'll leave Thursday and hang out at Laguna. Then display at Legends in the morning with my brother and The Historics Sat & Sun. Looking forward to a great time and meeting some FAQers!
Anybody know how much the tickets are for Thursday at Laguna?
EDIT: looks like $30 at the gate for paddock access on Thursday.

Thanks. You are right. In some ways of being so short of the bar has taken some pressure off. Had I boned out the money for the Quail event I would have really been bummed, I would not have been able to take the car there.
The car will be at Legends (in whatever state it is in) and I am really stoked about that, smartly I withdrew my application for the Races as well as Quail.
Currently body is getting finished up - color next week?
And....
New Brake Rotors Fabricated (Porterfield, Costa Mesa, CA)
Calipers rebuild/restore (PMB Performance, Sandy, Utah)
Custom Motorsport "style" Radiator (Brassworks, Paso Robles, CA)
Rack * Pinion Drop Steering Knuckles (SMR Components, Mundelein, IL)
Enigne - 8 flywheel bolts away from Dyno run (Bob Wirth, Hayward, CA)
I got sh^t all over the place, and a frightening number of checks to write for a s-load of money. You can't take it with you as they say (and I won't be at this rate).
You aren't the only one who's stoked about your car going to Legends! I'll be there in my Boxy '02 as well (first timer). Looking forward to it!
