I thought you might be doing that (buying a complete daily driver). The 02 is getting close to cage work and rear flare installation. I just took the rear suspension off for big brake installationa and the toe & camber kit install. Haven't started on the motor rebuild yet, trying to make a decision on a cam I'd like to run. I want to get it done this summer to shake it down on a few track days. Glad to hear you're doing well.

    Cheers,

  2. Kinda new to 2002's also, but from what I know so far, if you lower your '02 too much with NON-shortened struts (and inserts) you'll bottom out big time (bad for the strut set-up). Running shortened struts and inserts allows you to lower the car and not bottom out on the inserts. Additionally if you run shortened struts, you might consider having them bent for an additional 1 degree of negative camber to help with cornering ability. Hopefully more knowledgeable folks will chime in!

    Cheers,

  3. Those letters are used to placate the people who usually have absolutely nothing else to do with their time/lives. Let me guess, the letter "strongly urged" you to get your car fixed, right? Ignore it. Drive on your merry way. This is the result of your $1.6 BILLION of annual registration fees hard at work...to "clean up" California's "smog" problem..... "Let's send some letters!", says some brilliant, domestic V8-drivin', fatass, CAQMD bureaucrat. Don't fund any mass transit system for SoCal's westside or anything....that would be too difficult, blah, blah, blah.....I hate the CAQMD, they suck.

    Venting finished.

  4. Don't mind me, I'm just subscribing to this thread and soaking up some suggestions... 8^)

I've accumulated 9.5:1 Euro 2nd over bore pistons, Stahl header, Dual Solex 40's, electric fuel pump, Tii booster and a free core engine from Kyle as well as his 320i bare block...

    Cheers,

I got a 914 V8...I say go to the dark side and have a boatload o' fun!!

  6. here's my line of thinking when looking at the type welders i pictured....1st off, they're inexpensive...i believe i can buy one for under $50.00 on ebay...under $100 ship'd

i have never needed a welder and don't forsee ever needing one for anything except repairing the front end of that nose mangled 72 i recently bought

regardless of what i buy or what i spend, i have no experience....it would be far easier for me to clean up ugly welding (as clyde mention'd ) than to spend a ton on something i'm pretty much considering a disposable tool

i know my skills will probably suck but the pain won't be nearly as severe at &100.00 or less as it would be having drop'd $4-500.00 or more

another consideration is the power source...i have 220 but it's not "portable" like 110 is...meaning it's simple to run a rated extension cord from the nearest available 110 outlet

i'm probably gonna risk it....i was hopeful that someone here had some experience with this type and could give feedback on it's effectiveness in doing what i'm buying it for

    thanks for all the comments

Don't be so hard on yourself right off the bat!...MIG welding can be daunting at first (like anything you don't know about), but it is VERY easy to do...IF YOU PRACTICE AND HAVE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT! (ie: a gas MIG welder)

I'd really stay away from a flux-core wire (only) MIG welder. At least the gas type MIGs give you the option of running flux wire. Having to brush/chip slag off of your welds gets really old, really quickly.

MIG welders are like cell phones (these days)...after you buy/use it for a while, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it!

BTW, I bought my Miller GS 420 MIG for $200 (with the cart and the helmet)... the deals are out there.

    Cheers,

  7. Nice ride Todd!! MORE PICS!! (or is it in your blog already?) 8^)

I cranked my front control arms in the vice before stitching them and I vice-gripped the ball joint end prior to welding it up. The fronts are only spot-welded channel pieces, I'd definately stitch them and weld the ball joint head.

Todd, a bit off topic, do you know the size and et measurements of the rims under those great-looking box flares? Tire size?

    Have fun!
