How do I take my gas tank pick-up off?

I am away from home and wanted to take a peek at the pick-up for my gas tank. Does this assembly just twist off pretty easily? I don't want to break anything by twisting too hard. Any hints?

Disconnect wires first, of course. Use some kind of straight edge that will fit between the slots in the top, and twist gently counterclockwise. You have to rotate it about 45 degrees or so before the tabs on the pickup assembly will clear the opening in the fuel tank.

It is about a quarter turn total but only needs a slight turn to "break" the seal. I found that the rubber seal had enlarged a bit and it made it a bit hard to put on as the bolt holes did not line up. I bought a new one but it was $30 Can$ which I thought was outrageous.
