  • 3 weeks later...

I heard today that this car is still available, and sure enough the CL ad is still up, so thought I'd share my notes from when my friend and I looked at it a few weeks ago, in case they're of help to anybody .

The car makes a great first impression (confession, I think Granatrot is beautiful), with quality paint in excellent condition and a very clean interior.   In fact, it looked at least as good in person as it does in pictures, which has not been my typical experience with 02's. ? There were a couple of tiny rust boogers on a rear fender lip, but otherwise I didn't see rust, including in the usual spots.  It's in excellent condition, especially for a Midwest car (its many years in dry storage probably saved it).

All the instruments, lights, heater controls/blower, windows, etc. work, although the passenger side vent window didn't fully seal.  The air conditioning has been nonfunctional for many years but the Behr console is in great shape with unbroken vent slats and a working fan.

The engine was a high point.  It started quickly, idled smoothly and pulled really well (my scribbled note says "engine= whoo hoo!") so it was fun to run through the gears.  My buddy thought it could use new shocks, but to my old bones it rode and handled well enough to make shock replacement a "maybe next year" thing. On the downside, some synchro wear was evident on the 3-2 downshift, although it was also fairly easy to avoid.

I ultimately decided to buy a roundie I was considering at the same time, otherwise this one might've come home with me. Hope it ends up with somebody who will take care of it. ?

Idk, but my guess is that it’s because it’s January in Chicago.  ❄️ ?  Not the time of year most people in this neck of the woods are looking to test drive and buy a local 02.

Also, I was running craigslist searches regularly at the time and for some reason this car never popped up. I don’t know if there was some quirk about the way it was listed or what, but it was odd. The only way I became aware of the car, and could find the listing later on, was through the posting here on FAQ. So, maybe people looking only on craigslist weren’t seeing it, not sure.

Hopefully it’ll get a good home, definitely seemed like a nice one. If only I had the garage space for another one (and oh yeah, the money). ?
