Awesome thanks.  I'd definitely lean roundie if all else is equal.  And, prefer black/dark interior.  I don't personally mind a beat exterior (as long as of course not a rust bucket) but don't want a project for the engine/trans etc. Thanks again.

Re: bumpers. Easy to switch? Yes, just some bolts with a kit. But there's going to be several holes afterwards. You can easily put in small plugs from Home Depot. Or, you can do a full conversion and weld up all the holes and paint it. Up to you.

I spent several months looking at cars before deciding- 

 

These are 45 year old cars and at your price point expect to have to put in some mechanical work/$$$. 

 

As you live in CA. I would stay away from the 1976 model year due to smog requirements.

 

I originally wanted a Roundie, but nothing at my price point fit the bill.

 

The Square taillights are less desirable but, I am very happy with mine and enjoy driving it and working on it.

 

Do your due diligence and don’t be in a rush- that’s my best advice

 

Look for a dry, straight and as rust free car as possible- mechanical issues are solvable- the other potential issues are far more problematic to deal with.

Appreciate the tips.  Definitely hope to find a west coast car (both for ease of delivery, but also for hopeful lack of rust).  

 

Looking too for a good FAQ on buying used, what to look for in terms of common problem areas.  

 

I remember being a small kid and my grandma had both a Datsun 510 and a 2002 -- somehow both are dream cars now. Ha.
