restrictor plate in Stock Bosal center resonator... question

WTF.... i was SHOCKED to see a heavy plate in the center of the resonator with a "+"-shaped opening in it. i am going to eliminate this with a straight pipe (mostly just to see what happens--may replace it later with a series of glasspacks or something). has anyone else noticed that their Bosal or Eberspacher (sp?) center resonator has this restrictor plate? i was just wondering if perhaps i might have one for an auto car what could use more low-end torque... ya,.. just wondering...
