Automatic downpipe PERFORMANCE difference vs 4-spd?

So I'm looking at an auto downpipe and a standard

pipe. The lengths of the pipes are different before

the "Y" and they also enter the "Y" at a different

angle. I'm wondering, could this offer a

performance advantage or disadvantage over the

stock. I suppose if it did, they'd use that downpipe

on the tii or Turbo. But thought someone might

know. Anyone know anything about this?

I know the auto could be good for little extra

clearance, but on my car i don't really need it w/ the

5 spd.

TIA,

Rob

I would bet that, if anything, it has poorer performance. Otherwise, why not use that design on the manual transmission cars, too. They are not any different in terms of materials or manufacturing costs, and it would have been cheaper for BMW to rationalize on the a single part that could fit both apps. Those lederhosen-clad gnomes were pretty smart...
