Why do racers tape an X on headlights?

I have been wondering this forever. Why is that they tape Xs across their headlights. Is it pervent them from breaking? OR perhaps the birthplace of go-fast stickers...something like the v-tec sticker?

Because someone is probably wondering or gonna ask 'why don't they just take out the headlights then?'. Well, because they CAN'T. Well, in some classes at least. ie, in Improved Touring, you HAVE to leave the lights in, but you also HAVE to cover them up. Once you move up to GT or other classes, things change, depending.

Ouch .. It bugs me more when the stuff that gets crunched is the same stuff I just fixed.

See how the taped headlamp stopped the lens from scattering?

Front end damage on this car is not a big deal to fix, you are in for more heartache when this happens to a 2002!
