under dash panels questions

While installing my new radio, I decided to remove the console and re-run speaker wire to the speakers that are installed under the dash. I have some questions:

1) When I removed the console, there was a cushion back there between the console and the heater box that completely disintegrated upon touch. Do I need to replace this and if so, with what?

2) The speakers I speak of are about 5"x7" and are located at the far end of under the dash. Is this stock? Is this cobbled? Can I get new panels to replace these?

3) Will Turkey really make you sleepy?

Thanks

Brett

Search the archives and see how many different setups there are for radios, speakers, antenna placement, and so on.

The "accepted" stock setup was a radio in the console with a single 5x7 or so speaker directly underneath it.

I personally like mounting the speakers in the end underdash panels. The 4" round ones from E30s fit nice and have a nifty little grille. Doesn't detract from the stock look and improves the sound. Check around and you can find the underdash panels. I believe the drivers side is the toughest to find (at least cheap)but they ARE out there. Don't cut good panels, find some used ones that already have holes.

BTW : I think turkey has a bad rap. Go eat 5 pounds of ANY food and see if you don't get sleepy. OK, except 5 pounds of chocolate covered espresso beans.

2002AD has said they may reproduce the panels in the near future. I have speaker up front and in the back, I can't imagine a stereo without at least 4 speakers...

1. There's a small piece of foam glued to the trailing edge of the small under dash panel that goes directly above the glove box. It's just a filler piece. I think there was also a small piece of foam wedged in under the heater. Not vital, just noise insulation.

2. 5x7 underdash speakers were definintely not stock. All USA 2002 radios were dealer or owner installed. They didn't come from the factory with radios, so you find speakers in all sorts of creative places. Mono radios usually had the speaker below the radio taking up the entire console storage bin, but my '73 with A/C had its single speaker under the dash in the far right hand underdash panel. So...take your pick.

3. I'm an '02 guy, not a cook; don't have a clue.

Cheers

Mike

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
