Bumpers 76 2002

Anyone know if refinishing the aluminum bumbers on a 76 2002 is possible? Feel free to reply to my email address.. Thanks for any suggestions..

I've wondered the same, sorta. Could they be cleaned and chromed instead of painted? Isn't chrome more durable?

I have not done it but have seen the results, which were great. The guy said he spent 8-10 hours on the job -- you have to remove the anodized metal with battery acid and many grades of sandpaper, then buff and protect with a clear sealer.

-Send the missus out to the mall, say, the day after Thanksgiving (it took me a whole day with frequent refreshment breaks).

-Dissasemble the bumper, removing all the rubber parts.

-Strip out the old anodizing. I used an angle grinder with a coarse disk, since my bumpers had some ugly gouges.

-Starting with 80 or 100 grit sand with progressivelyfiner grit (200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000) until you get it as smooth as a baby's behind.

-Using a good metal polishing compound (I used Flitz) buff it to a mirror -like shine. Install the rubber back, put the bumpers back on the car, take ou a cold one and sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor!

I did mine about six years ago and did not clear-coat them. About once a month I go over them with the Flitz and a cotton rag and they have held up very well.

I polish them once every 6 mos.w/ Flitz and then cover with a coat One Grand Blitz carnuba paste wax. Never been clear coated and they are shiny enough to shave with after five years.
