2002 Starter Upgrade Options

I am familiar with the fact that the M3 starter is considered the "essential" starter upgrade, but could it be possible to use starters from other BMWs (i.e. 80s 3- and 5- series) and still get the same effect?

Thanks,

P. Hewes

Big 6 starters are about $30 @ Pick & Pull - they're an exact replacement and really spin an M10.

M3 starters are great, but cost quite a bit more, new or used.

a full service dismantler (I don't know of any yards that give more than a 30 day warrantee on parts - especially electrical stuff).

That said, if you get the 30 exchange option @ P&P, take the starter home, check the bushings, solenoid and brushes, install it and find that it works ok, you've got a better than even chance of having gotten a good starter at a reasonable price. Both of the ones I've pulled are still going strong a year later.
