My daughters found a 4.5 inch shark tooth yesterday! It is pretty awesome. From what I can gather searching the internet, it appears to be from a Magaladon prehistoric shark!

Sorry for the WAAAAY of topic post, but I thought one of you guys might appreciate it.

Where did they find it? I heard you can find stuff like that near Cleveland, OH (Rocky River gorge or something?). I'd be pretty excited about that find too, but then I'm a geologist.

It was found in Haddonfield NJ, about an hour west of the Jersey shore. THe kids were digging in the neighbors yard! They found some other fossils of what looks like big bugs too! I am going to post an image on my web site this evening.

I'm not very familiar with the geology of the northeast...haven't ever been there. I know there are some grabens in NJ (down-dropped bedrock bounded by normal faults) that contain Trissac age sediments that you can find dinosaur bones and stuff in. Found some links for you:

Apparently, this area has a bit of geologial significance.

Lots are found in Venice Florida, the "petrified sharks tooth capital of the world." I have a two incher that I found on the beach some years ago and several quart jars full of smaller teeth. Bring it to WVA and I should be able to ID it for you.

I e-mailed pictures to a geologist in South Carolina, and she confirmed that it a Megalodon tooth! Judging by the size, it was from a 37 footer! Well over a million years old!

I will bring it with to WVA, I figured there would be a few of you interested ;-)
