  1. I have a 4 speed transmission and driveshaft that came off my car (the p.o. put in a 5 speed). I have no idea of the condition of the transmission but I would prefer not to store it forever (that's how long I plan to keep my car). Does anyone need this or is there any value in it if I put it on Craigslist or Ebay? Thanks in advance for any input. Mark H. Oakland, CA 1976 2002
  2. I am going to buy new wheels as a birthday present for myself. I have always loved how the Minilites/Superlites/Panasports look on our cars. I don't really like the harsher ride and boy racer look of 15" wheels or I would probably include the Rota RB's to my list. I prefer the 14" wheel as an upgrade over stock and I believe all three of the brands that I mentioned above are or were made in that diameter. So, any advice on which wheel is the way to go? I did a search on this site which was great for giving me the width, offset, tire size that is appropriate, etc. However, I still feel there is room for up to date input. Which wheel do you recommend, why, and where is the best source (read price) to acquire. Also, if anyone knows of someone with a set gathering dust in their garage I would love to know that as well. Thanks in advance for any input. Mark Hoffmann Oakland, CA 1976 2002 Mintgrun
  3. So I hammered out the transmission tunnel for the slave cylinder and put the 5 spd into place. I did not notice that it was still very close where the transmission housing that holds the slave cylinder is located. I would like to make a bit more room without pulling the trans again. Has anyone successfully put a pry bar into that area and widened it? It only needs like a quarter inch or so. Thanks in advance for any guidance.
  4. So I searched the archives and much of the info is old (for instance the Costco cover appears to be no longer available). What is the current consensus on the best (read cheap but effective) cover for one of our cars? Thanks in advance for any input.
  5. So I was adjusting the cabin temp when the little plastic knob on the heater/vent control came off. Serious opinions sought on the best glue to use putting it back on.
  6. Thank you so much for taking the time (twice) to answer me. I will research springs a little more.
  7. I'm looking for the best vendor to purchase a set of Suspension Techniques Springs and anti-sway bars. Any leads? Thanks in advance.
  8. Some dumb questions, I've done some searching but I couldn't answer all my concerns. I got a bunch of the original Dynamat left over from a friends Hot Rod project that I plan to use. So before I pull my carpet to replace it I have a Dynamat question. I keep reading about getting the old sound deadning out with heat guns or dry ice. If the stuff is already there shouldn't I just leave it in place or put the Dynamat stuff right over it? Secondly, I read that people put the dynamat on the door right under the upholetered door panels. Is that prefered? I was thinking to put it on the inside of the door itself since I have the windows out at the moment. Finally, I was planing to cover the firewall, transmission tunnel and doors only, is there much noise transmitted through the floor pans and rear trunk (I was going to put foam pieces under the rear seat)? Thanks in advance for any advice.
  9. So how do you like the ride with your new set up. I'm considering the same. Thanks
  10. So I have a bone stock '76 that I'm sinking money into. I already have Billy HD's on my shelf and I'm thinking that if I'm going to the effort of putting them on the car maybe I should think about springs and bars as well. However, I have heard that the 1976 2002's have taller springs. Is that true? Does that mean that I have to do something different with a '76? Anyway, I am looking at what appears, from my searching this site, to be the usual 3 street springs - H&R, I.E. stage 1's, and Eibachs. Is there any argument for one brand over the other with my year car? I am looking to end up with an (almost) daily driver that handles better but without being too high, too low, or too harsh a ride. Later I will ask my anti-sway bar questions ;-), thanks in advance for any ideas/opinions.
  11. My car has a short somewhere in the loom. I checked everything I could think of (all the easy stuff). The car starts every morning however if the car sits more than 24 hours the battery is dead. Is there a website that breaks down how to chase down a short? Or a tool that can sense current in an individual wire so I can go through the loom wire by wire? Any help would be appreciated.
  12. So is there a good supplier of 2002 parts in the Boston area? Thanks in advance for any help.
  13. So I get a bit of wind noise from the sunroof on my '76 2002. I've got new gaskets so that's not the problem. I see 2002's with those black plastic deflectors and even though I don't like their looks I'm wondering if it's a practical solution to my noise issue. Thanks in advance for any help.
  14. Not a BMW but I'm looking for my wife. Here's the VIN WAUNF98P86A004873 Thanks in advance!!! Mark 1974 Tii 1976 Mintgrun
  15. OK, I did a search on this site and have found out that an early Porsche 911 has a wind deflector that will fit my 1976's sunroof. However, after checking ebay for months (missed out on one but it sold for more than I wanted to pay anyway), and talking to 3 different Porsche recyclers, I have come to the conclussion that I'm not gonna find one of these in decent condition for a price I would like to pay (one Porsche guy even said if he knew the part was for a BMW that he would'nt sell it - he would want to save it for a Porsche guy that needed one). So my question is, has anyone ahd any luck with the deflector off another make of car? I was looking at "Pull your Part" and it looked like some could work with minor fabrication work - however, I don't want to re-invent any wheels here. Thanks in advance for any help.
  16. So I want to put a little money into my cars suspension ($500-800). I've searched this site and found some good info but a lot of it is from several years ago. I don't autocross or such, I'm just looking to update/renew the 30 year old suspension and get a set-up that allows for spirited driving without losing to much comfort on thew road. I'm thinking about 22mm bars in the front, 19 in the rear, Bilstein HD's at the corners and some sort of newer springs with a slight lowering of the car. My concerns are the spring stiffness (I don't want to stiffen the ride up too much or I'll never get my wife to come out for a drive), is my swaybar choice a good one, what works best on a 1976 (isn't my starting ride height higher to start?) and whether to go with a package like Kormans or piece meal it to get the best conbination of set-up and price (I thought that I read that Kormans kit is really a ST set-up). I'm sure that someone with a '76 or knowledge them could give me some advice based on personal experience. Thanks in advance for any help.
  17. I've got a 1976 that is stock. I want to improve the handling a little but it's basically for street/spirited driving. I've read some archived posts and I plan to put in HD Bilsteins and leave the springs alone for now. What is my best choice for sway bars? I read alot about 22 diameter front and 19 rear but I see a lot of bars on the market that don't always list their size. I know I hear Suspensions Technique bars mentioned alot but what do people think is the best bar for my application? Cost is some consideration. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
  18. So my door lock cylinder broke (like it would turn too far and not unlock or lock the door). It then fell out of the handle while I was driving. So what is my best move? Buy a used door handle with lock and have it reworked at a locksmith so it matches my ignition key or is there a better or simpler way. I would like to end up with the same key working both doors and ignition. Thanks in advance for any help.
  19. I asked this a little while ago and I'm still hoping for an answer. So my Father-in-laws 2002 had a bad sunroof seal for a while. He never fixed it and finally the sun-roof it's self started to bind until the plastic clips at the end of the cables broke. I am now fixing this but the underside of the roof in the area where the sun-roof retracts has light rust and the paint is flaking off (paint flakes in the tracks are what caused the sun-roof to bind). The original paint almost looks like it's fuzzy, is this a special kind of paint? I've scrapped and vacumed out the loose paint and treated with a rust inhibitor. What would be a good paint to apply to this area before I replace the sun-roof? Of course I'm usind a small, long handled roller between the headliner and the underside of the roof. Thanks in advance, etc.

  21. I need new cables for my sunroof. Are they all the same? Do some vendors have better quality ones? Thanks in advance for any help.
