Another option is take any loose parts down to your local transmission shop and give them five bucks to put it in their parts cleaner. Intakes, valve covers, etc. turn out perfect with no hassle.

Nice looking 2002!!! just kidding looks like a 71 E? How much mess was left over on the floor after using this for awhile?
Thanks, Rick
Close! It's a '68 912. Stemaing does not create much mess at all. That piece of cardboard in the first picture is the bulk of the mess after an hour or so of cleaning on the left wheel well. Most of the dirt is removed with rags after a combination of steam and brushing. Just have a ton of old rags that you won’t want handy. One of my favorite benefits of this is all you need is distilled water; no chemicals.

I have been in a similar situation and the steam cleaner has come in handy plenty of times. When my car is up on stands in the garage, the last thing I want is gallons of water all over my workspace. Also, I am rather paranoid about water flowing into the cracks of the body. The steam cleaner takes care of both these issues without the use of chemicals and is definitely a garage staple of mine. Here’s the cheap unit I bought on CL for $25:
And some before and afters:
Only thing is, it can be a little more time consuming. I use it on all sorts of stuff though...

damn... tempting even from here on my couch in CA. The non-tii engine is a bummer, but this car as a dd? All day.
Do you have pics before the paint job and are you willing to ship?

i don't drive any of my pre-galvanized cars in the rain. The thought of water being forced past every cracked piece of rubber into the depths of bare metal is enough for me to just drive a different car. It's the same reason why I hand wash my cars a panel at a time.

Motor pulled nicely! Engine bay was also painted, interior looked solid minus the center console, also remember the sunroof headliner missing. clutch felt good.Paint peeling badly on drivers door, rust on the rear wheel arches, rockers pretty darn rusty, back panel in between taillights was banged up, center console was kind of janky, spare tire well was rusted out and repaired with sheet metal and rivets. wire loom in engine bay had been worked on and was rewrapped in red electrical tape (entire loom) looked funky. shift linkage was the worst I've ever felt in an 02, bumpers were dented, air dam pretty thrashed... I passed on the car.
sounds like my car when i bought it!

Yeah, I gave it to another guy to sell he was all excited...I said have at it. I tried but I'm moving on, should have bought a 30k car in the first place. Alcohol and eBay do not mix.
Ha! Can't remember how many times I've told myself that on a Sunday morning...
