  1. Yes, possible for squares and for roundies, too. Here are some details: First step is cleaning and restoring the lenses and reflectors for maximum reflectivity and transmissivity (great words, eh?). Have to be careful with the square / plastic, not so much with the round, it's metal. Reconditioning (cleaning and retensioning) contacts is good too. Second step, install high output bulbs in the sockets, increase tail light output 67% (same wattage) and brake/turn/reverse light output 33% (+ a few watts). Bulbs all have nickel base, perfectly kosher. Third step, add a custom bulb in the brake light sector, for two lights in one socket. Makes the car look bigger, closer, lights are brighter, and of course far more reliable. - no single point failure weakness! This last step is a no brainer for me, is what I did with my 1972 (roundie), and currently am doing with about any German car of similar vintage. It adds a second, low wattage filament in the brake light socket. The socket is designed for the brighter bulbs used for brakes, turns, reverse lights. This turns your brake light into a second tail plus brake light, increases tail light output to 14 cp, versus 6 stock, and the size more than doubles! The mechanics in the square lights is very similar to those in E12, E21, E23, E24, and plenty of other cars, I have plenty of experience doing this conversion from single to dual (or even triple) tails. I wanted to do a dual brake light as well, but there's no place in the reflector with a red lens that will take it. Still, you can have brighter brakes, turns, and reverse lights, and bigger, brighter tails. There are other options for brakes, but I hesitate to post them publicly; I don't want to seem a 'Dr. Frankenstein.' pm or email me for details on further possiblities. Perhaps an LED conversion is in my future?? Thanks for asking!
  2. Bump - is there no one with an E21 three series on this forum who thinks their rear lights are dim? Wish they were brighter? Want to know how to modernize and upgrade your lights to make your car more visible day or night, and help avoid being crunched in back? High output bulbs available, they are brighter, same watts as stock. Nickel plated base, naturally. Pictures above show the improvement with upgraded tail and brake lights. OK, then let's talk about the two versions of E21 tail lights - four versus five reflectors. Any Euro cars with working rear fogs? Want some? Wonder why there is an empty / dark spot in your light than never lights up? Want to put it to work? Want double tails, double brakes, AND working rear fogs? It's all possible... Anyone have any questions at all??? Thanks for engaging in the conversation!
  3. I am getting a lot of push on another forum (Bimmerforums) to photograph and post the mods I invented for E21 three series tails. I ought to post it here, too, I thought. Basic overhaul is to restore the reflectors to renew the "shiny" for maximum light output, modify light bulb setup to double the number of bulbs lighting for tails and brakes, and change to high output bulbs for even more light. Conversion doubles the apparent size and triples the output, and effectively eliminates the possibility of a dark tail light due to bulb failure. The converted tail lights are just the back portion, lens stays with your car. It is plug and play, and is safe for the lenses, wiring, fuses, etc. Been doing rear light improvements for all kinds of old BMWs for years and years, just decided to post here for the really nice old cars, and help you keep them away from wrecks and out of the junk yards. Attachment shows the double brake light conversion to one tail light, it looks totally stock but way brighter. Double tails shows a similar improvement. I just think it's a good idea to put bulbs where BMW 'forgot to'. Hope I can help out. Anyone who has been hit in the rear will want a set of these - or anyone who doesn't want to be hit! How much for a pair? good question - how's $50 sound (exchange) for the restoration and conversion, plus bulbs and shipping? You send them in, I'll work my magic and send them back in less than a week. Comments? Suggestions? Need my shipping address and PayPal?
  4. > Yes, sorry if I wasn't clear. Carb/manifold/filter sold/shipped today to utjeffc. Manual (in blue 3-ring binder, great shape) sold/shipped with bumper parts today to Psymon. New pics up soon; I am up to my elbows in peaches, canning 2 bushels today and tomorrow. Happy Friday, everyone!
  5. SOLD! Weber carb/manifold/K&N filter/Filter kit SOLD! Found a bucket of new cooling system hoses, will post pics.
  6. Bump - Carb and Manifold may be sold ... Make me an offer on any / all of the rest, it does more good on your car than in my garage.
  7. Early lenses have the tail light (smallest bulb) next to the turn signal, a big brake light section, and four sockets/reflectors. Late lights have the tail light in the middle, and five reflectors that are more or less the same size. They are not interchangeable, plus I read on the board it's a bit of a PIA to swap, with sheet metal work and so forth. Let me know which ones you have, and I'll try to help if I can.
  8. Manual, I had the pull on the left side under the steering column. Seems like it was designed for a choke cable. Andy
  9. Let's keep in touch, I may need yours, too! Depends on how my E21 tail light Optimization Project turns out, how good they look, and how many folks want to be seen, and not hurt! Hopefully no one is in the 'Already Been Tagged' category. The lenses are NLA, sadly.
  10. Hey, have one, right side, intact, but a bit hazy, 'milky' around the edges. I'll take a pic and send it , may take a few days (major demolition to garage starting soon). I will see if it cleans up with a little love, soap, plastic polish. Andy
  11. Kevin- I got a set but the driver side busted in transit- Thank goodness it was insured! BTW, lenses are NLA from the dealer. I am going down the list, and may be letting the post office pay for the next set, yours! Please pack them WELL! Get in touch with me. Everyone else - stay tuned. I will be optimizing these as soon as I get a complete set, and post pics of the improvements possible with early style 4-socket lights. I am certain I can make them brighter and bigger, hopefully avoiding rear end damage to your E21 (and injury to you). I will add at least one tail light, and might be able to add a second brake light -- but not usure yet how I'll do it, since there is no 'extra' reflector/socket present like in the later E21's (after 8/79). Keep your fingers crossed.
  12. All parts came off '72 2002. Side reflectors, one red (wired) and one amber, complete, $5 each. Bucket O' Hoses (all new), will post pics soon. Denver Colorado, will ship. Andy
  13. Fabulous, that was fast! I'll be in touch. Good luck with the wasps, I just killed three nests!
  14. Anybody have a pre- 8/79 (early style) E21 parts car with left side (or both) rear lights in fair-good condition, I need a lens and possibly more of the lights. please use email for faster response. Thanks a million, Andy
  15. Thanks, I do post in bimmerforums every twice in a while, I am trying to reach as wide an audience as possible. I am working on LED upgrades to these old classics, too, as soon as I get enough of a deposit I will build one for pics. For now, I am doing it with high output light bulbs, nickel base of course, as closely to stock methods and parts as possible. I have upgrades for about all the 'older' bimmers, and would like to keep more of them on the road. I look forward to posting more soon. With Pics, of course. For example, here is a pic of an E30 tail light, high performance, that I just sold. One pic is tail lights, one is brake lights. Stock, you get one of each. Modified, you get two. ON EACH SIDE, that is. Similar effect on the E21, I think. Notice how much brighter and bigger the added brake light is... it's the one closer to the license plate. That is the part of the light BMW never wanted you to see lighted, and is what I do for folks who don't want to meet people by 'exchanging information' over the trunk of their cars. Plus, Murphy said it - if a bulb can fail (and they all fail) it will fail at the worst possible time. Having two bulbs for tail and for brake on each side, you will likely not see both of them fail at the same time, just common sense.
  16. Not a 2002 mod, let me know if this should go somewhere else on the forum, I'm new here. But an old BMW fan from way back. Posted this on another forum, I was referred here because 'there's alot of E21 guys on BMW2002faq.' I am a regular on 'mye28.com' and had a 2002 as my one and only, my DD for 28 years. Short background: dim lights on the back led to 5 (five) totals in that time, until I made a change ... which I now do for LOTS of cars, primarily BMW. Here is what I posted over there... "I was browsing the yard yesterday and came across a set of lights in an E21 320i, 1983. Naturally, I disassembled them to see what I could see, and found some very familiar parts inside... that's nice to see! These lights are similar in design to the E23 seven series; not much of a surprise there, considering their vintage. They are Robert Bosch equipment, not the more common Hella. Similar to Mercedes Benz and quite a few other cars. Good news is, they are every bit as 'adjustable' (double the tails, double the brakes, and additional functions) as other Bosch lights, which is to say, RIPE for improvement. I didn't get any pics, no camera at the time. But if you are familiar with BMW lights, think E30 early lights, very similar layout. Inboard to out, they are Reverse, Brake, Tail, (nothing) and Turn Signal. Seems 'Nothing' is where a rear fog would live if installed, not in the US however, but here's the good news. Upgrading the E21 light is very simple, and can be done with the lights in the car. Simple job, too, requiring only the lights harness (connector socket and four bulb sockets with wires) to be swapped out. Tools needed include a small socket and small screwdriver. Just remove all bulbs, pop out the old harness with connector and bulb sockets, snap in the new, reinstall bulbs, and go! I will be happy to do this upgrade as an exchange-- you remove your original harness and install the new one. The lights harness is exchanged to become the upgrade harness for the next guy in line, and the cost would be fairly low. Like under $50 with shipping for both sides. Restoration of the lights would of course require removing them and sending them here, where I will restore the reflective surfaces (the way I do with E24 shark lights), install thehigh performace harness, High Output bulbs, and return all shiny new to you. Motivation is avoiding being hit from behind, keeping you and the car on the road! Options would include the usual - add one tail, one brake, or both lights on each side. You could also add a rear fog light to utilise the lights as designed, one side or both, as you wish. Or, you could combine functions to add a tail light, brake light AND rear fog light, combining three upgrades in one. Three more light functions where none exist now. As usual, I use all BMW parts, sparks/ fuse-popping/ melting are avoided, and the entire thing is reversable with no harm or change to the existing lights, wiring harness, or car. I will post in the For Sale - Parts as well, and hope to get some pics up. Have a nice Saturday, everyone!
  17. Hey, I had the same car, driven daily for about 28 years! [VIN was 2582401, was yours close to this?] My sig says what I do, love to help anyone interested in brightening up their rear end and/or headlights. Been at it a while, so I can probably answer all kinds of questions re: lighting improvements. Just an FYI- I do not consider lights as fashion accessories, so not going to sell tinted bulbs or smoke your tails unless there's a good reason, and ONLY with high output bulbs for reasonable output. Off-road cars are exempt from this. Joined today, Glad to be aboard!
