  1. How is this any different than not knowing a spark plug's socket size? If you do not remove or install spark plugs, not much incentive to learn and it becomes game show fodder.

Most probably do not know the name "Dixie" or the various "W" designations used by MB, the difference between the A,B and C 365's, Model T, A and B Fords or a Royal and an Underwood. If you don't sell them, collect them, work on them, or despise them for taking your parking space, the information is irrelevant and there is not a particularly strong case for learning this.

Sure there is. The BMW is an enthusiast's car, or should be. If I sold them I would have at least a passing knowledge of the history of the marque. How long could it take to learn the basics, an hour?

  2. Until he passed away recently the salesman who sold me my 2002 in 1981 was still working at our Tucson dealership, and our BMW CCA Chaper's immediate past president is head of sales at the dealership. So, some of them know '02s.

    Bob Napier

My car's sitting in Tucson right now at the trucking company. Supposed to get here by Wed, but sounds pretty unlikely (South Carolina)
  3. Shopping for a new car for my wife yesterday, went by a BMW dealership to look at a used 328i vert.

I was shooting the breeze with the sales guy, who appeared about 35 years old. Showed him a picture (below) of the eBay car I just bought thinking he might think it was pretty cool.

He had no idea what it was.

He did offer he was in a really old BMW once, one from the mid 1980s.

  4. $15k seems to be a watershed amount.

I just paid $15k for this car; was I taken?

That is a beautiful car. I like that the seller provided lots of pictures and both the good and bad on the car.

That car just looks right. I believe there is $15k worth of good in the car. If the seller was truthful about the rust being contained in one area and you can get that fixed for a reasonable amount, you will be fine. If there is rust elsewhere, you might have to undo some of the goodness.

That said, fixing the rust won't make it a $20k car. Only time will.

    Thanks for the kind words.

I already have had the diff seal and half shafts/boots done.

When it arrives, straight to the body shop for what ever needs being done.

If there is more rust, well, thats eBay. Then a nice set of michelin X-AS from Coker, wheel and knob restoration....

I'm rolling into the concours, get ready boys!!!! :)

  5. Quick question Guys...

Back in the day... Automatic 2002s were looked at with scathing derision by most 2002 guys.

    Is that still true?

If so, what becomes of the automatic cars? does anyone care for them/repair them/keep them in good shape?

Are there any enthusiasts that enjoy them nowadays?

(For the record, I just bought a 4 speed car)
