    Councours
Attended the 2022 Legends of the Autobahn East in conjunction with the Hilton Head Concours.

Drove Vern down to Hilton Head over 2 days with my friends Wayne Killen with his 1987 Mercedes 190e 2.3 16v Cosworth & Doug Dolan with his 1972 S38 M Powered 3.0 CS.

Spent Thursday detailing our cars at the rented beach house with a 3 car garage.

    Vern & I  competed in the 2002 Class with Stuart Oberman's 1974 2002 Tii & Tim Wing's 1974 Turbo.

The juddge had his work cut out for himself. In the end, each 2002 was separated by 1 point.

    Vern 3rd, Stuart 2nd & Tim 1st.

    Early Slotted Nose Trim
Just received the restored slotted nose trim. The shop worked wondrous miracles & exceeded my expectations. Was lucky to be able to buy this elusive trim here from a friend who sold it on the FAQ. Here are the before & after photos. The "kink" in the trim was very difficult to massage out, yet the craftsman was able to do the near impossible & get it to 99%.

    Concours
August 28th 2022 was the Boston BMW CCA Concours d'Elegance at Prowse Farm in Canton MA.

I spent most of Saturday cleaning & detailing Vern. It was the first real detailing since returning from Germany last October. Did all the "heavy lifting" of detailing the chrome & touching up stone chips. Removed the rear panel pieces & cleaned behind them, they were absolutely filthy.

Left for Canton at 5:30 am & was in line by 8:15 am. I was asked to be a Judge back at Larz Anderson German Car Day in June. After a final glass cleaning & wipe down. Rags down was at 11 am

We had a Judges meeting at 10:30 am. I was on Team 3 & we handled the both Late Model & Modern Super Clean Classes, I was the Interior Judge. Some of the newer cars interiors are spectacular! The M4 with the 6-speed was amazing & I gave it 50 out of 50 possible points The dirtiest went to a Z3 Roadster with leaves in the back & didn't appear to be vacuumed very well. These type of BMW CCA Concours are Clean Car Contests.

I entered Vern in Vintage Clean with 12 cars n the class. Mainly because I didn't want to clean the car to be in the Super Clean or Concours  Class.

As the awards were announced at 1:30 pm I was taken by surprise when I heard "First in Vintage Clean is a 1973 2002Tii owned by Andrew Wilson" It was an honor to win as there was some serious competition

After the show several of us went to Trillium Brewing for something refreshing. It was a great way to end the day!

    Monterey Car Week
This year we shipped Veronika out for the week & stayed with our friends in Del Rey Oaks.

Veronika arrived at 10:30 am Tuesday! I had time to clean her up before the Hagerty Monterey Kickoff in Pacific Grove. We parked together with Steve Kupper, Jim Huff & MotoLisa.

Wednesday was The Little Car Show in Pacific Grove. MotoLisa’s 1967 Derby 1600 & Veronika parked together & Sara Nelson parked across  the street with the “Katy Perry” 1970 1600 Cabriolet. Derby & Veronika won Merchant Awards. Veronika was awarded as super sexy from a CPA in Pacific Grove.

Thursday was Legends of the Autobahn. Veronika was in the very competitive Preservation Class with 6 BMWs. Jim Huff won 3rd with a 1965 1800, an 850Ci 2nd & a 1981 Alpina B6 3.2 was 1st. Veronika’s photos made  both Car & Driver  and Autoweek Legends coverage!

Friday & Saturday we spent at Laguna Seca for The Festorics. We visited with our racing friends, Scott Hughes with his 1973 3.0 CSL number 51, Jim Huff with his 1965 1800Ti/SA & Steve Walker with a GS Tuning 2002 & Group 1 2002. Saturday we had the privilege to park inside the BMW CCA Hospitality Tent at Turn 5.

Sunday we drove Veronika down to Big Sur for breakfast at Deetjen’s. After breakfast we headed North for sightseeing. We did a walk to a small waterfall & upto a lookout vista. Then returned to Del Rey Oks to drop Veronika with the shipping company at 5 pm.

    Ownership Anniversary
May 10th 2010, I bought Vern on ebay, sight unseen. I did my due diligence, talking with the seller Steve Pallamar for an hour & his mechanic in Norwood Colorado for 3 hours.

    Mid-America '02 Fest
Vern ran smoothly & quietly for the 3500 mile round trip to Eureka Springs Arkansas. 4 days to get there, & 3 days back home. Great  '02 Fest from the Friday drive to all the advice & '02-centric workshops. Bo Black received the Friends of the BMW CCA Award. Caravanned with Mike Self, Larry Gray & Walter Ingram both ways.

    Germany Tour
This year we shipped Vern over to The Netherlands & spent 3 weeks touring with the BMW Classic CCA. We also attended The Bavaria Tour in Oberammergau Germany.

We picked up Vern outside Rotterdam in The Netherlands. The battery was dead because the shipper left the key in position 1. Long story, greatly shortened, 3.5 hours for an ADAC flatbed, a long cab ride at 200kmh & 1200 Euros later we had a new 69 Euro Varta battery! The rest of our touring Vern performed flawlessly as usual.

Saturday September 26th 2020. Drove Veronika up to Belgrade Maine to visit Brenda & Tanya Athanus. They each own 2 2002s. Both of them had 2002s new from a Maine dealership as far back as 1972. Nate Williams, from Sports Car Restoration in Plainville Connecticut, was there to visit & successfully had Brenda's 1969 Nevada 2002 running after sitting for 2 years.

I parked next to Tanya's 1973 Golf Automatic, as Brenda zoomed around the road & driveway loop.
We enjoyed spirited conversations with snacks & beer.
Then Tanya drove her 1975 Granarot "The Pink Car" next to the Golf Automatic so all 3 grill styles were represented.
After visiting for 3 hours I headed the hour home at dusk, getting home ~7:30 pm.

    Detailing
Cleaning, cleaning & more cleaning. After a week & a day of wiping away the dirty oily grime with Simple Green, an old toothbrush, 2 rolls of blue paper towels & hundreds of Q-Tips. Here are some before, during & after. Veronika is ready for her close up.

    Alternator fail
While on the Hilton Head Concours Tour today, Friday November 5th our 1968 1600 Cabriolet alternator stopped working & then we drained the new battery.

    currently waiting for a flatbed.

As Many of you know we live in a beautiful area of Maine with picturesque vistas and excellent locations. Across the street is lovely Thomas Point Beach, 85 manicured acres on the New Meadows River. I shot Vern here in the Fall of 2010 and still use those photos. The other great locations are down Route 24 to Great Island, Orrs Island & Bailey Island. it's 17 miles of quintessential Maine with the only Cribstone Bridge in the US. It's a latticework of granite blocks to allow free flow of the tides.

Here are a few of the photos from Saturday May 2 & Sunday the 3rd.

    Larz Anderson Auto Museum
A lovely day at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, a suburb of Boston MA. Met other Nor'East'02ers at the abandoned Indigo Hotel in Newton & caravanned over to the Museum to park together. I drove Veronika & we arrived at 9:20ish. Great to see everyone & all the cars. Rob Seigel drove his 3.0 CSi, Warp 9. The most significant car was the 1937 Horch Coupe. Veronika had a great spot at the end of the '02 lineup & across from original owners  Charles Barne's immaculately restored 1972 Golf Tii. Many of us "held court' in the shade & discussed almost everything "under the sun" from the Germany & Bavaria Tour, Lime Rock Fall Festival to The Vintage at Saratoga & the Hilton Head Concours in November. The drive home was an uneventful top down adventure.

    Misselwood Tour
Had a delightful first Misselwood tour. I took several photos of Vern with the blooming flowers on the estate. Josh Sweeney also took several driving photos & others on the front lawn of the estate which I will post at alter date.

    11 Year Ownership Anniversary
Purchased Vern May 10th 2010 on eBay. Has been a great 11 years of adventures with the first being the 3100 trouble free miles from Telluride Colorado to Brunswick Maine via Canada in one of the best road trips ever.

Placed all the under hood stickers, finally. Original and new there are some differences as some stickers are NLA like the 'BMW air pressure' which was near the left turn signal. So had to compromise with what is currently available.

Does anyone have a picture of where the Ate blue/white sticker goes in the brake booster?

Making an Aluminum Under Dash Panel
Made a new hood release/hazard switch under dash panel out of 24 x 24 1/16th inch aluminum sheet I bought at Lowe's, January 30, 2021.

The original hood release hazard switch panel was ripped & distorted from the past 52 years of heat & cold use.

    1. Made a painters tape template. The peeled it off the panel slowly & carefully.
    2. Flattened the tape to the aluminum sheet along the grain.
3 Outlined the template with Sharpie & marked all the screws holes & cut it out with metal shears & drilled the holes.
    4. Used the original panel to get the curved edge at the top of the is photo & measure the flange at the bottom.
    5. Fit perfectly the first time! The upper left screw was the most difficult to install

Removed, dismantled, cleaned, taped, painted, untaped, cleaned some more, reassembled & reinstalled the instrument cluster. It's a huge improvement, the glass was filthy. Used Dupli-Color Chrome, it's a bright silver, not like the original shiny chromed plastic.

    BMW Cabriolet Door Seals
Picked uptake new door seals ordered from Walloth-Nesch at Vintage Sports & Restoration Friday January 15, 2021. Had been waiting a year for the set of new door seals to become available & bought them the day I was notified of their availability.

First step was to label where each seal went, wash off the mold release powder & sand the gluing surface of the rubber.
2nd step was removing the desicated old rock hard door seals & clean up the old glue with Xylol. This process took an eye for detail over 2 days, with breaks for fresh air.

The full Cabriolet door seals are made of 4 separate pieces. A-pillar, door sill, upper B & lower B-pillar seals.

The A-pillar starts at the top & meets with the top's foam window block. For this I had the top up & locked. With a plastic broad bladed trim tool, I worked the rubber flange into the aluminum channel. This took 10 minutes per side & let the lower part hang loose for now.

The B-Pillar lower part was installed next. The top needs to be unlatched & lifted to give ample space to install. This piece clamps the top of the body panel & has a channel that extends to the rear upper door card. Then gets glued in position.

Upper B-pillar on the 1/8th window. I put the top up & latched to see how long the piece needed to be, unlatched the top & opened it 1/2 way. It's an easy piece to install. I didn't glue it, there is a flange on the leading edge then pressed in the back with the plastic trim tool. I went from an inch above the flange to 1/8 below so it meets the top of the lower B-pillar slightly compressed.

The door sill seal I fit the the B-pillar first then installed the screwed on sill plate with 6 stainless 8 x 3/4 (8 x 2mm) Phillips pan head screws. I installed all 6 screws then marked the A-pillar to the sill gasket, removed the first 3 screws & test fit them together. When it was ready, I glued the lower A-pillar & fit the small tab into the door sill seal. Finished installing the screws & lastly the pinch welting.

The next project is to adjust the doors & A-pillar windows. The driver side door needs be lowered in the front & raised in the lower right corner. The passenger side requires a window height adjustment & the A-pillar window raised and tilted inwards 1-2°.

January 21st. Finished installing the door seals this morning. Thank you Mario Langsten, Chris Langsten & Voit Ritch for the advice & guidance. I used 3M Yellow Weatherstrip Adhesive which works great.

    Restoration
Since making & having the side panels upholstered two years ago, the spare tire side didn't fit flat & flush with the fuel tank panel.

To tackle this job, I removed one staple & measured it at 1/4 of an inch. I just happen to have two boxes of these staples.
So I was good to go with my upholstery adhesive & an ultimate set of tools.

The short story, remove staples, peel back the 'elephant skin', scribe to other panel, cut, test fit, glue, staple, trim & done.

    Such a satisfying job.
