  1. My car is 1974 2002, with Air Cond, not a Tii. See photos. Q. The alternator photo, there's the plug that goes to the alternator, got that one for sure, then there's a positive (red) cable that I hooked up to the rear of the alternator. I know I need a ground wire (missing in photo). The question is, you will see a male connector that comes out of the main harness that doesn't appear to have anywhere to go. Where do I connect that? Q. See the photo of the ignition switch. There are two brown/green wires that come out from the switch. What do they hook up to? Q. See the photo of the funny connector. This wanted to find it's way up into the instrument cluster area. I don't have a Tii, so it's not for the clock. It's coming out from the harness and you can see the colors. The car had fog lamps, but I'm not sure if they were after market (I think they were) or OE. I'm lost on this one and just hoping it's not important, because I really don't have anything to plug it into. No picture, but the horn harness has a positive(Red) and negative (Black) wire that plugs into what? Just any positive lead and ground??? I don't see homes for them either. Another starter wire question too.... positive from battery goes to the big nut on the starter. Then a red wire from the starter solinoid (6 o'clock position) to the coil positive terminal. Anything attach to the solinoid 12 o'clock position? What else connects to the coil? Obviously the lead wire to the distributor, but what else? Sorry for the big list of questions. The board has been a great help. I'm just an old fart that loves this car. It's been 7 years and I'm close, but don't want to muck up. I'm not a mechanic, so everything I've done is from your help, reading, and a lot of swearing. Anyone in the Tampa Bay area that can help, give me a shout! Thanks, Len
  2. Photo from my2002tii.com My car is a 74 Non-tii in the photo, there is a silver control box on the firewall driver side.... it's a Bosch part. I have it installed and found a wire harness for it. The harness is not part of the main harness and the plug in this harness does not fill the whole bottom of the unt, but it does fit the connectioins. My questions are, do I have the right harness plugged in? What is this unit? Where do all the other wires in this harness go? There is a large black plastic connector that is also a part of this piece of harness. I've no clue what that is or where it goes either? I can't ID any of this stuff from the wire diagrams I have. I can (and most likely will) post photos of the mess . We gotta be nuts to do this.... Just when I get a few wins, stuff like this get's me so discouraged... Thanks, Len
  3. The photo is fom my2002tii.com The part I'm trying to ID is the silver relay with a red and a red/white wire going to it (very top of picture). I have the relay, but can't find the wires to attach. My harness was removed during resto tear down. I've been having fits trying to put it back. It's been one piece at a time, so I'm sure many more posts will follow. Thanks, Len
  4. Thanks - that's what I needed!!!!! Len
  5. I'm talking about the thing that has the window on it to see the bubbles when you charge the system. Mine is not stock and it basically has an in and an out hookup. I don't know which direction to put the hoses. One goes to the condenser - outside front grill, and the other goes to the evaporator assembly inside the car. So the hose that goes from the condenser to the dryer, does is go to the in port of the dryer or the out port???? That's my issue. Thanks, Len
  6. I didn't know for sure what the part in the photo was, or if it had to do with the A/C. Thanks for your input! Another mystery solved! I'm still trying to figure out the In/Out ports on the air dryer though. Best, Len
  7. See attached. Car is 1974 2002 with Air/conditioning. Not sure where this goes? Also, I have a "aftermarket" air/dryer. The rest of the A/C is factory. The dryer has an in and out port. What I don't know is which hose connects to what on the dryer? I have the factory install guide, but it doesn't identify the in or out on the dryer. Since my dryer doesn't look anything like factory, I'm not sure on the hose hookup. Thanks in advance, Len
  8. Wires B and C connect to the rear defrost switch. That leaves A, D, and E, I don't know where they go - if indeed they go to the instrument panel at all????
  9. Thanks, but I guess what I'm asking is where do the wires connect to the cluster, that aren't already on the cluster - but rather come from the harness????
  10. See attached photo Question is where do these wires attach??? A = has two black wires B = green / blue C = Red / Black D = this is a six prong plug with only three connectors in it, brown/green, white/red, and brown/red (hard to see) E= comes off the main plug for the instrument panel and is brown and grey, faded white, or light blue (can't tell the trace color too well) Thanks, Len
  11. OK, thanks, I was going to hook it on wrong. I think the first response mis-understood the photo. Ground to the bolt that holds the alternator together, got it. Not to the hex bolt that I pointed to that has a black wire on it, or the other pointed to spot that has a nut half undone. That's where the bare wire with the missing connector can go (either one). BTW - can you shed any light on the positive cable lead? See my other response ... it's part of this discussion - sort of an add on. Not having another 02 to copy from, I'm trying to do this by reading and asking for help. I don't claim to be a mechanic or know anything about auto electronics, just a wrench turner - that's me. Thanks, Len
  12. Thanks, See additional image.... This shows the positive battery cable going to the starter (assume it goes on the solenoid). It also shows a positive direct lead to the alternator, and I think the horn relay...??? Another lead off the positive goes to the ignition switch. The drawing indicates to me hard wires. I get the starter lead - that's fine. But is there a wire that feeds off the positive battery terminal that goes to the alternator, horn relay, and ignition switch too??? My old positive cable looks like it's been modified. The backbone of the cable goes to the solenoid. Then there are two pigtails off the cable, 1 = that's attached to the bolt and is about 11" long with a eye ball connector... 2 = runs out the back of the lead connector that is fairly long, and looks like it has an inline fuse in place - this one terminates with bare wire and it's a bit "burnt" at the end Then off of the second lead, someone "pigtailed" another red wire that has a 15 amp fuse in line, and terminates with a flat plug connector. UGH So does the positive bulky go to starter, the fish eye to the horn relay, the bare end goes where? Then the flat push connector? Driving me nuts in Tampa, Len
  13. See attached photo. The plug to the alternator is a no brainer. Good thing for me. The other wire that comes out of the harness (missing the connector) appears to want to land right on the terminal indicated in the photo. What I don't know is are there any other wires that go to the alternator. My project is nearing the end. It's been long and this board has been a life saver for me. I'm sure that I'll be having many more electrical questions. I have the wire diagram - which helps, but photos appear to be much better. Example, I have no idea where the positive lead off the battery goes - aside from the starter? Negative goes to ground and that's it? In any event, I'm taking it one component at a time, so there will be additional questions as I work my way through the whole harness. Thanks guys, Len
  14. I kept the front drains in the same spot - down the "A" pillars that exit out the rear of the wheel opening. Warning, re-installing those front hoses are a all out pain. Took me several hours to fish them through. You may want to use cable guide or something. There is a bend right where the a pillar meets the front dash area that you can't get to and have to really muck around to get it in there. Better to go from the exit to the drain than from the drain to the exit - IMHO. There are several options for the rear. Depends on what you want to drill, wheel wells are an option as is the trunk floor and any other spot where you can run flexible hose. I'm sure others will offer suggestions. Good luck, Len
  15. On to the fuel system.... 1) The two wires that attach to the fuel gauge sensor (sits in the tank), how do you tell which wire goes on which terminal - or don't it matter? 2) There is a vent hose that (I think) goes from the rubber gas filler neck to the expansion tank in the trunk. Is that correct? 3) There is another nipple on the expansion tank, what tube goes on there, and where does it terminate? 4) I'm set up for dual DOCE's - so I don't "think" there will be a return fuel line to the tank. Do I just plug the return inlet on the tank then? OR is there a return line that I am unaware of. That's all I can think of right now, but I'm sure as it comes together, there may be more. If you see anything I missed, holler at me! Thanks, Len
  16. In the drawing what is the part number for the alternator bracket (part 16 in the drawing)? Is there a "universal" NAPA part number someone may know? I guess mine found the bit bucket in the sky somewhere during the re-assembly process. Thanks, Len
  17. I did buy new front strut bearings, so the ones on the left, I think are just left over from the old bearings. I'm not sure where the hex bolts go. Agree they resemble the rear axle bolts, but aside from being too short, the rear end suspension is rebuilt and not missing anything. They mystery continues. I was hoping someone would recognize them, but I'm beginning to think they just found there way into the parts for my car and may be from some other project. Although the only other "suspect" was a old VW - Mini Bus that shared the same work area as my car during "dis-assembly". Thanks all, Len
  18. Been working on my car for 7 years. Hope to be done soon (end of summer maybe). In any event the whole car was taken apart and most parts (thank goodness) were cataloged. BUT I have no idea where these may go. The hex drive bolts, there are 15 of them. The others look like they are "set into" something - almost remind me of the front strut bolts. Both are 8mm X 1.25 threads. Both types are only about 3/4" in length. Any clues??? Thanks, Len
  19. Got it all together. Glad I asked, although it seems odd that the only thing holding up the rear are two rubber hangers. Appears all is good to me now. Thanks. Len
  20. OK Thanks! Now that's an answer!!!!!! Appreciated. Regards, Len
  21. the header pipe bracket that attaches to the transmission... 1. is it needed? Seems like it could be omitted without any downside... curious what the purpose is. 2. the bracket that is on the transmission where the pipe bracket attaches has very large holes.. what size bolts go there/. Looks like I'd neeed washers about the size of a quarter for a small bolt.... Thanks, Len
  22. If you are upgrading your 2002 with Dual DCE carbs, you are going to need a bypass tube that runs from the heater out to the water pump. Ask me how I know. After many suggestions and me actually buying a tii bypass tube, I ended up making my own. Just get yourself about 18" of 3/4 Inch copper pipe, two 45 degree angles, and one slip joint. Cut the pipe to length, add the two 45 degree pieces on one end and the slip joint on the other. Finished product needs the slip joint to make a good seal with the hoses. See photo of finised part. Hope this is helpful. Len PS - the tii bypass tube is for sale - reasonable offers entertained.
  23. I read the post on the 320 install http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,57/page,viewtopic/t,284983/highlight I have a 320 radiator, but it appears that the top neck hits my bonnet. Nothing in the thread that mentions the height. I haven't verified that it does actually hit, but a visual as I lower the bonnet - sure does look like it will. Is it too high to fit?
  24. How does the rear view mirror install? I have new headliner installed, so I'm figuring I need to "feel" for where it goes?? Thanks, Len
