  1. I was looking through the parts collection tonight particularly, at the instrument gauge pod and even more particularly, at the difference between 1968 speedos and 1969 speedos. I'm assuming the 68 set-ups must have been on only 1600's or very early 1969 02's coming off the line.

The early 2002 speedos, have red lines next to 30-55-80 MPH.

    The 68 speedos have:

1 red line next to 25 MPH

2 red lines between 45-50 MPH

3 red lines between 70-75 MPH

Pretty neat little difference. I think I like the increasing red line effect a bit better. In my opinion only, the gauges got a little more chintzy looking as the model years passed by.

  2. Hello folks......

I sent off a couple of nice strut assemblies to a fellow FAQ'er. He's working on, I believe......a 1600 and unfortunately, I don't know which year.

The strut assemblies I sent were I'm sure.......off of a parted out 2002 or possible just came in a "package deal" with a parts car I purchased a couple of years back.

Below you see his reply to me. I don't have a clue? Can anyone help? Did I perhaps, send him tii struts that I didn't know I had? Was there really a difference in 1600 & 2002's with respect to spindle size? Maybe there was a switch over between early 1600's and later one. I'm S-T-U-M-P-E-D and would have liked to have gotten this fellow the parts he needed.

Any comments would be really useful.

"I also checked the spindle against the ones on the 1600 and they are different in size. The ones on the 1600 on the inside bearing 27mm the ones you sent are 29mm so there is two sizes for the cars and I don't know whether the 1600 is different then the 2002. Can you find out why there is a difference?"

    Thanks,

    Jerry

  3. Take it from someone who has been seriously considering Fiats, Alfas, and Lancia's..........we have it pretty darned good.

No, I don't think our parts are quite as available as MG or Volvos, nor nearly as available as old VW parts. Also, when available....they can be spendy.

However, it seems to me I can get my hands on nearly everything I want.....and well more than half, I can still buy new.

Parts availability would not, in my opinion, be a reason to pass on 02's.

  4. I have three of them, plus the two on both of my roundies.

The three extras are not great, thinking one is actually.....close to junk.

But the other two, as I recall, are serviceable.

However, I'd sell either of the other two for cheap. Drop me an email.

By cheap, I'm thinking $100 or so. Shipping won't be much.

  5. I've got two sets of chrome hinge covers with two more sets

to remove from seats not worth refurbishing.

One set of hinges, I will be using to.....well, replace the black

    crinkle hinges.

The other set I currently have, I am willing to sell. $50 + shipping.

  6. Howdy from Salem, OR.......

If you ever want to visit & talk 02's, I'm right down the road. I've got a pretty big collection of parts as well. Let me know if I can ever help.

You might want to sign up for our PNW2002 list and pose your question there.

    The address is:

    http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/PNW2002/

Locally, I'm only vaguely familiar with Salem Cylinder Head......on Cherry Ave., 503-290-1485.

I can't make a recommendation since I've never used them. Actually, I've never had to have (knock on wood) a cylinder head worked on since I always have a bunch of them around in case I need one. So, I'm at a loss.

David Lumbra is first rate and I second that rec.....he'd definitely have some idead and hopefully, one of them will be in/around Salem.

    Best,

    Jerry

  7. You know, part of the necessity of "drama and smartass remarks" is the building of community here. A community, that "ye-of-two-posts" are decidedly not yet a part of.

There's a long history here that I suppose, you are unaware of and Andy's comment referred to that.

But to push this thread in a positive direction......the unnamed Canuck in question....his name is Al.

    Al@SeamsPerfect.ca

    http://www.seamsperfect.ca

I'm pretty sure, he sells a salt/pepper set in both wool as nylon loop.

You'll receive a plethora of opinions about him. You could use the search function to gather data and oh yeah, picked up a source for your salt/pepper question in the process.

  8. I very much would like to see a vendor review forum. I'm not sure why we couldn't put this together outside of the FAQ.

As for Al @ SeamsPerfect, put me down for 4 transactions.

Two of which, I would rate a 5 out of 5.........positive.

Two of which I would rate a 3 out of 5, since he did miss an agreed upon delivery date and wasn't super responsive to communication.

However, he has delivered on every order I've made. I will eventually be purchasing a wool carpet from him and arrange for an install of this carpet and a headliner.

I'm sorry that the thread originator is having troubles.

  9. Hey Beaner.....

I'm guessing there's perhaps, a difference in dash from US spec cars and cars sent to Aussie. However, that dash was used in the 69's and early-70's. I have both a 69 and an early 1970 (pre model-71) and they all have the pull-up hazards.

Dave can confirm this, but it looks like the original instrument cluster/dash combo to me.

  10. Amtrak took the buyer's name, number, address, etc.....and called him when it arrived at his local train station. In addition, I had 2 different numbers that could be used to track the item. They actually give you a ticket stub with a number and then there's a number on the "bill of lading". Seemed like a good system to me.

I'll definitely consider using them again. I'm also sending this to you directly via your email link......since it's about off the page on the main FAQ board.

    Best,

    Jerry

  11. Hey.......that's great to see the pics. with the seats installed in your car.

You are MORE than welcome. I'm really glad this transaction went well.

By the way, remember this shipping tip that Steven actually discovered, AMTRAK Freight.

You can send a set of seats across the country: Portland, OR to

    Jacksonville, FL for under $90.

Probably the most inexpensive way to ship.

  12. Pricey? In my opinion........that seems like a very good deal for a sunroof car in that condition. I'm restoring a 70 sunroof car and if the 72 in the Craigslist ad has rustfree rockers and rear arches, that's a definite car to check out. Mine will end up costing me big time as the arches have to be cut out and redone.

I'm quickly realizing, ANY roundie in good condition that can be had for under 5-6K.....ought to be snatched up if you are looking for one. That is, outside of California where there are still some deals to be had.

  13. Probably a whole lot of "false bravado" being tossed about on

here. Although, of course......it does happen and we've all seen

    it or heard about it.

Take some deep breaths people......it is afterall, only a car. You can get another one. You can't get a new life or the money you've blown back........after paying for damage you've caused, fines you incur via the criminal justice system, or worse...... killing/being killed overreacting to a situation.

But still.....a lot of "big talk" goes on in nearly any auto forum. Yawn.....

    Jerry

  14. I think I made my "off the cuff" opinion given on the number of decent 02's I see for sale time & time again here in the PacNW.

None of them seem to sell easily. Course, most of them are square tails and perhaps, they aren't in as much demand. Not sure....and that's no knock on squares.

Maybe what I'm seeing is a division in the market. That is, there is an abundance of average condition to poor condition cars available. Those cars don't sell easily. Then, on the other end....I see really well sorted clean cars going for a premium. I'm not sure these cars sell either, but the asking prices are sure getting up there..........and seem to be rising.

    Maybe there's a paucity of cars that are 7 & 8 out of 10.
