  1. Thanks for pointing that out as I haven’t noticed that before. Yes, replacement is in #2. Standard size. I told him to go with IE and then two weeks later he told me the wait was too long. The quote was for worse case $3,300 and I put $1,300 down. I was hoping for long-term. The mechanic started out wanting a set and could only find flat tops. I hate having difficult conversations.
  2. After 10 weeks of being in the shop I checked in on my 76 02A this morning. The trunk was open and I took that as a good sign. And then I saw the block and my heart sank. The mechanic didn’t want to wait for IE pistons so he bought a used one for $300. Early on I saw a picture of it and thought it looked like the mid-rise piano top. Today the mechanic admitted, “it does look a little different”. The latest holdup is the machinest forgot to shave the timing cover. Soooo, can anyone give their two cents worth on the impact of running mismatched pistons? What would you do? A) Strangle him and take the car. Kiss his ass and wait for the car C) Eat the deposit of $1,300 and look for a new engine. D) Look for a new mechanic. I’m in Northern Colorado and would welcome recommendations. The good news is I’ve been riding my bike more.
  3. And replace your door cards at the same time…then there’s the protective film, clean up the window guides, replace the grommets, maybe the door brakes…welcome to the world of mission creep.
  4. There’s a guy on Ebay who cut my key from the number on the back of the door handle. Very reasonable and quick - Rfurtado1.
  5. Ok, I’m half laughing, half crying. Yes, it’s my daily driver. PO had the head replaced. My mechanic is saying the current head has been saved (or as he really said, “you have enough money into the head”). Here’s what I’m thinking. Have the block checked by the machine shop. Look for appropriate size piano pistons based on cylinder appraisal. Tell wife she’s covered for my birthday and Xmas for the next 10 years. Keep telling my financial advisor it’s an investment. Maybe I don’t retire in two years like I had hoped. Get an electric bicycle. Start taking more cues from my dog -
  6. Thanks. Where would you suggest buying pistons from?
  7. Thanks. Where would you suggest buying pistons from?
  8. Much thanks to everyone for their input and suggestions. I’m learning a lot and am thankful to have this forum. With that said what is my best path forward? At this time I only see used pistons in the correct bore on EBay and custom forged pistons from IE. Any other suggestions? My dad was a machinist at AMC making crankshafts for 30 years. He had a way with words, none of which are politically correct. I’m guessing he would have sent me to the boneyard for an engine. Kinda pass that point now.
  9. Thanks Steve. I do appreciate an opinion more informed than mine. Right now I’m only finding used pistons in the correct bore on Ebay. Would you install used with new rings? What are my other options? Kinda how I’m feeling at the moment -
  10. The mechanic thinks the car overheated because of low coolant causing the rings to disintegrate. I had checked the coolant and always watched the temperature gauge and both seemed fine for April in Colorado. The car is enough of a go-kart for me so I’m planning on staying with the 8.3:1 compression unless I don’t have a choice. I did find a used set on Fleabay so that may be the route to go. And no EV swap for me. I’ve already had a Leaf and an Audi E3 Etron. Fun but I’m kinda liking the utter simplicity of the 02. More good news - last night our financial advisor said to keep it unless the expenses stay high. I do think I’m done buying so that just might work.
  11. Do you still have these? I haven’t been able to see the number stamped into mine but I think it’s closer to 89mm and was looking for 88.98. Any ideas if these would work if the other pistons were 88.98? TIA.
  12. I am desperately looking for a stock piston for an engine with Vin # 4280314. So 89mm with the lowest of the piano tops. I only need one but will buy whatever you have. TIA.
  13. About a month ago I posted pictures of head/piston damage on My 1975 02A. Well, the culprit has been found. Now I’m desperately searching for at least one stock piston with the lowest piano top (89mm). The mechanic would like an entire set but I really only need one. I will post in WTB too but thought I should try this as well. Plus I figured everyone would enjoy the pictures. Yes, it was cylinder #2. Amazingly the walls were clean.
  14. Good news, my wife wants me to keep it. I miss that little bugger. My dog does too.
  15. Thanks everyone for your comments, suggestions and ideas. I have owned Binger for 15 months/7,000 miles. Previous owner was a woman whose husband bought the car for their/her 10th wedding anniversary. She owned it for 10 years with the biggest repair being a replaced head. I think that’s why the current mechanic is thinking they may have something to do with this. When I told Lou it sounded like a noisey sewing machine he said they all sound like that. I really don’t think it was sabotage but I remember when I had the Solex rebuilt they found a few stray parts. I was quoted $3,300 worst case for an engine rebuild so I finally know what I’m spending my COVID relief money on. The most disappointing news was finding I don’t have a matching numbers engine (2380015).
  16. After having only 20 pounds of compression in cylinder #2 Lou from Lou’s Autobahn tore the engine apart. Cylinder two head and piston have visible damage. Lou thought either the previous repair shop left something in the cylinder or the valve seat came off. Has anyone had something similar happen? Any other guesses to what could have caused this?
  17. Yes and I totally trust him. Look up Lou’s Autobahn on FB. He has a good reputation in Fort Collins and there isn’t that many options here. The $3,300 is if everything he finds when he tears it apart is bad. Haven’t told the wife yet.
  18. I acquired Binger on January 6th, 2020 and put 7,000 miles on it in 15 months. I was experiencing a lot of blow by and the day before the compression and leak down tests it started missing badly at idle. Compression in cylinder #2 was 20! I was quoted $3,300 on a rebuild, worse case. After one last mountain drive, I think an overnight to Steamboat, I will be letting her start another adventure. I became obsessed with the car, and this forum, but now need to keep the family happy. It is a remarkable car and even though it’s an automatic still a hoot to drive. Thanks to everyone who has helped me the past 15 months. I never quite became the mechanic my Dad was but I think I took the lead amongst my three brothers. May all our cars and us stay forever young.
  19. Yup, rings. The day before I took it in it started missing bad. Compression in cylinder #2 was 20! Worst case is $3,300 for the rebuild. Then I will take it for one last mountain drive and sell it. It’s putting a little too much stress on my family at a time we don’t need any more. I’ve had it for 15 months and am lucky to have found it. Even as an automatic it is a kick to drive.
  20. Thanks everyone for the advice. It’s just under 75k so it could be the rings. I have an appointment for this Tuesday at Lou’s Autobahn to get the compression checked and a leak down test. I did replumb the catch can and made a little hook hose to get the excess oil into the carb. I will give a final update on Wednesday.
  21. This one is on me. I’ve been having a hard time finding where to add text when submitting a topic.
  22. I have had my 75 02A for a little over a year. I thought I had it pretty well sorted with my crowning achievement being getting the fast idle to work properly on the Solex 2-barrel. I was having some minor blow by with a tablespoon of oil in the air filter housing after 2-3 weeks. I thought adding a Masamo catch can would take care of that but it seems to have gotten worse. The picture is after about a week of daily commutes. On top of that the air filter housing has more oil in it than before. Before the catch can I had the dipstick get blown out and fixed it with a couple of o-rings. Last week I had a spark plug pop out and it snugged up fine when I put it back in. The car is running as well as it ever has and there’s no smoke coming from the exhaust. From what I’ve read my next step should be a compression and leak-down test. Any other ideas? Any recommendations for a shop in Fort Collins, Colorado? I thought putting the FAQ stickers on my rear windows was going to appease the 02 Gods but instead my limited mechanical skills are being tested once again. Thank God for FAQ and thanks in advance.
  23. I am looking for suggestions on how to convert the seatbelt warning light to a clock and perhaps outside temperature. I would like to keep the original pod. Thanks in advance.
  24. Congrats and welcome to a new addiction. I recommend you get Rob Siegel’s Ran When Parked. He does a good job explaining how to rescue old 02’s. Best of luck.
  25. One time my Dad and I were chasing a overheating issue on my Opel GT. We replaced the water pump and were stumped because it was still overheating. Turns out the replacement water pump was defective.
