Has anyone bought and installed the belt line trim? How was the fit and finish? Any issues clipping on to the factory anchor fittings?

Some in-progress install pics would be awesome.

    Thanks, James

Great question about the fit of the beltline trim  Really needs clarification

Most posts about repo beltline (do a search) say that they don't have the correct radius and can't be made to fit correctly leaving buyers  dissatisfied  The common comment is that they are from China but who knows. Can the seller please clarify if these are from a new company and what is the fit experience.  Thanks   Lord knows we can't wait forever for BMW to produce these or pay polishers an arm and a leg to restore a set

I have been meaning to respond to your questions James! My apologies for the delay.

    AN UPDATE:

I have been personally working in the research and development phase with my supplier to produce this belt line trim set for the last 2 years now. The trim and bumpers, for that matter, are made by a new manufacturer  in Vietnam that has started his own company. This individual has been my contact the entire time when he was at my old manufacturer's operation but now I work with him as a separate entity at the new facility he started and the quality is better than ever. Since he has left the old factory, I have personally assisted him in replicating the 2002 bumpers to be more true to the original. For example, We have changed the impact strip holes in the long bumpers to slots so customers don't need to purchase $15 clips to install the rubber strips: multiply $15 by the 20+ clips to attach the rubber strips and you are looking at a hefty bill. With the slots cut in the long bumper, the fasteners only run around $5 a piece and you only need a few of the $15 clips for the end holes, also, we have made the edges more crisp and defined to replicate the originals as well. Through this retooling process we have experienced a back order on bumpers, but we are now getting production back to normal operating speed. So for all of you waiting for your bumper sets they will be on their way very soon.

So, enough about bumpers! Lets talk about the trim:

    FIT:

I am very confident with the fit! Each piece of stainless trim is fit to the radius and contour curves of the 2002 at each corner. This has been one of the most difficult hurdles to overcome, we've tooled up and have all we need to really nail down those pesky contours and radii. Now the trim really hugs those corners nicely. The lengths are accurate all around the car and the ends are capped and polished. The inside mounting rails match that of the stock pieces with the cutouts to slide in the fasteners built in. The fasteners slide freely up and down the inside of the trim with little effort :)

    FASTENERS:

The metal fasteners will replace every plastic clip on your 02 except for the two on the pass and driver doors near the door hinges, those plastic clips will be left there because you cannot get a  metal fastener in that location from behind the door panel...but our trim will fit over the stock clips at that location. It is recommended you get new plastic clips for those locations by the door hinges. I have attached the pictures of the fasteners to give you guys a better idea of what they look like below. They come with metal washers, nylon washers, and nuts to secure the belt line to car. 60 fasteners total.

    FINISH:

The finish is a nice polished mirror and is very durable. It has a nice, smooth reflective surface and It is not plated, so if you scratch it you are able to buff on the surface without having to worry about burning through plating because there is none! Also, the trim will never rust or oxidize.

    MAINTENANCE:

You will need to clean them just as much as you would clean the outside your 02. There is really no maintenance besides just cleaning it every once and  a while to clear the dirt and bugs off! It also wouldn't hurt to hit it with a metal polisher like Flitz or the like to shine em up every once and a while.

    INSTALLATION PICS/VIDEO:

As far as installation pictures. I took some but they are not very good because I was trying to be the camera guy and the installer. So, I have got an installation video production day on the calendar to demonstrate how to get the trim pieces on. So keep an eye out for that, its coming down the pipeline.

P.S. The car in the pictures is my personal 2002 and this is not the first set I have attempted to install. TBH, I've gone through many frustrating days in order to ensure the best fit and finish of these sets before I brought the trim sets to market. I have corrected all mistakes and found avenues to nail down the accuracy of the trim. With this last installation I am confident and very excited that the sets coming down the line are up to the "overall" standards in the 2002 community, IMO. I know these sets have failed in the past with the fitment but I have been determined to overcome those previous failures due to the need for these pieces in the 02 community. I also have heard from some folks at the Bay Area Swap And Show at the Brisbane Marina that even the OEM pieces have been misfitting lately. But I am happy to say that this is not the case with 02bumpers.com sets.

    P.P.S.

I am working on getting the touring sets for all you hatchbackers out there. It will happen.

    Best,

    Chris

Near as I can tell the biggest issue I have encountered with a new rear bumper manufactured by 02 Bumpers is that the shorty end pieces appears to be about .25-.5" shorter at the front tip than the factory original.  What this causes, and you can see it in one of Mario's images above is the bumpers doesn't protrude far enough forward to fit closer to the natural body indentation.  While this is not a show stopper it points to either a design flaw(Measurement) or a manufacturer flaw not making them long enough.  Either way they don't look show class with that gap.  However if it's an everyday bumper you are looking for, they definitely fit the bill.  I give them overall a 6 out of 10, due to fitment issues.

Thank you for the feedback. We have since adjusted our molds to more accurately represent the OEM bumper specs. Please reach out if you have any issues.

    Best regards,

Is 02 Bumpers affiliated with Bluntech (Minnesota)? Is 02 Bumpers located in SLO, CA but bumpers ship direct to customer from Vietnam? Or do they go to 02 Bumpers first, then the customer? (I go to SLO often to visit family and could save on shipping if they go to SLO first and I can pick up)

What is required for maintenance on these items? Polish with metal polish as needed as if they were chrome? I recall 02 Bumpers used to offer both chrome and SS

Are custom orders available? Are customer-supplied original stock (chromed) bumper guards/horns interchangeable with these SS bumpers, or will there be fitment issues? I'm interested in a front bumper but don't need the horns, and only need the rear center bumper section.

    Thanks!

    Ryan in SF

    Hey Ryan,

02bumpers is not affiliated with Blunt, however, we do work together on occasion. The bumpers are manufactured in Vietnam, then sent to San Luis Obispo (more specifically Morro Bay) where they are then distributed to the customer. I am more than willing to meet for a local pickup.

We have discontinued the chrome bumpers and offer only stainless due to the stainless steel's superior traits over chrome plated steel. You can buff out scratches with a buffing wheel and use metal polish to shine them up. You will never have to worry about buffing through any playing because there is none!

I'll PM you about your custom order.

    Thank you for your interest!

Can someone elaborate on the bodywork needed to make these fit, or are they plug-n-play when you buy the proper mounts? I’m a little confused. This would be for a ‘76 square tail. Thanks.

         Seth

Hey Seth. So the body work that would need to be done is purely cosmetic when using the conversion brackets that are offered on the website.

Here is a brief overview of the holes that are left when converting from late model bumpers to early: There are holes in the front fenders and the rear quarter panel that are left from the accordion side mounting points, as well as cutouts in the front nose where the late model brackets are inserted (the bracket kit provides the sheet metal to close up these cutouts around the conversion brackets), also there are holes which span across the lower part of the rear panel, I think there is roughly 8-10 screws which are used to mount the rubber flap which covers the gap from the rear panel to the the inside lip of the late model bumper. The rear bracket mounting holes are covered by the rear bumper. Another option, if body filling isn't one,  is putting plastic grommets which can be found at your local hardware store to plug each hole and paint them to match the color of the car. This option is more of a "quick fix". Please email me at chris@02bumpers.com if you have any other questions. Hope this clears some things up!

Hey Chris, It's been since December since I bought the short rear bumper with cutouts, and you advertise allow 4-5 weeks for delivery.  Well it has been twice that time, and still do not have an update from you.  You have had my money since December, do you think you can send me the bumper I ordered this week?  I'm very disappointed.

    ☹️

I apologize for the long wait. I have emailed you with an update. This year we are experiencing major delays due to the Lunar New Year. I am very sorry...I have been pushing as hard as I can to get your shipment.

I have a 73 with the long side bumper extensions  that conform to the rear body indentation. I like the tucked-in look. Will the length of your replacement tips, after mounting with your altered bumper brackets,  still match the indentations?

Yes the long rear bumper sides conform to the notched cutouts in the rear panel where the corner wraps around the side.

I bought a rear bumper from them in person (Brisbane show). I can safely say you can buy with confidence.

On that note, I realized that I very stupidly gave away my early rear bumper brackets, and need a set to put the new bumper on. It's an early car, so the conversion brackets won't work in my case. Do ya'll have the early brackets by any chance?

Nice to hear from you again!. Please check out the following link for the rear brackets. Blunt sells them for $32 each. Hope this helps!

Any updates @02bumpers? We still haven't gotten our 2nd deposit. Seems the only way to get a reaction out of this guy is to go public.

We WILL be filing reports w/ FBI/Oakland PD so let us know if you want we can give you a case number or whatever.

He paid me in full via Paypal. So him and I are square. He told me he wasn't going to be able to get me my second half until he settled up with you guys at IE. So I wrongfully assumed you guys had it worked out once I received the full reimbursement. Here is the info that I was able to gather on Bobby:

    His paypal name and address:

    Gaoqing Yang
    2907 harrison st
    Oakland, CA 94611
    United States

Same shipping address that many of us have on file but with a different first name that I have never seen him use. When I first looked up Bobby Yang on Facebook I could not find him anywhere. Once I received the first half of the payment through paypal I just up Gaoqing Yang and found a "Bobby Yang" from San Francisco in the Facebook search engine. In the profile Bobby seems young, like 20 something. There is no real way to tell if this is him or not...but I did a little digging around his profile page and found another name he goes by: 杨高勍   they are Chinese characters, and when they are typed into google translate you get this: Yánggāoqíng
That is his full name in Chinese translation and it puts the last name first and the first name last...flip them and you have the name on the paypal address gāoqíng Yáng

That really makes me think this is our guy. This is all speculative but it seems like too much of a coincidence to be untrue. Maybe we can cross reference the photos in the profile with Erich Horat? Since he seems to be the only one in the community to have met him face to face. Not sure how this all will help you get paid but the more info we share the better off we are, right??

Here is the facebook profile link: https://www.facebook.com/bobsterdyang

I will take the case number just in case any problems flare up in the future and to add it to my folder of evidence but I am happy now that he has paid me in full. (not happy he hasn't paid you guys). I have all my transaction details saved in a folder along with the reimbursement payments. If you need any of these documents I will be happy to provide them to you. I can also send you transcripts of my personal messages with "bobby". Let me know if you need any more help with this and good luck, I am hoping you get this sorted out.

  13. Update: The co owner of the car (now the sole owner?) contacted me he paid half of the cost today and said he will have the rest of the bumper order paid for by August 10th. He seems willing to settle this whole thing with me once he completes the payment for the IE order. I am hopeful we will get all this squared away.
