This is my literal dream car....the one I've been looking for to replace my '71 Sahara. I can't believe I missed it. I am also in NC....if the new owner wants to make some money on it now or ever feels like passing it along please message me! I'm in the mood to do something stupid about it....

Sorry you missed it.  I'll let the new owner know about your post.  He's an enthusiast, I believe his plans are to keep the car.  You never know.

  2. Price: $13500
    Location: Virginia Beach, VA

    Description:

1971 2002 Riviera over black.  Mostly stock except for the following:

    Weber 32/36 with manual choke.

    Ansa exhaust.

    IE exhaust header.

318i 85 amp alternator (have original 35 amp alternator).

    Funky radio.

I am the third owner.  Complete restoration in 2000.  Over $45,000 in receipts.

Some things unique to this car:

    shorty bumper (3/71 build date)

    matching numbers

Original window sticker and service manuals

    hinge key

Hirschman antenna, tool kit, and jack

    5 new tires.

    New driver's window regulator.

    Rebuilt steering box.

    Bilstein street shocks.

    New H4's

There is a rust hole on the driver's frame rail that has not changed in the 8 years I've owned the car.  The car was undercoated during the restoration in 2000

Rockers, door bottoms, fenders, rear shock towers are rock solid.  Interior is good.  Door cards are perfect.  Small hole in the bottom of the driver's seat.  Dash has 4 cracks.  Headliner is original and is good except for the area around the interior light.

Everything works except the horn (I've fixed it twice in eight years).  The heater cable needs to be reconnected to the heater valve. New rear bumper and stainless hardware ready to be installed.

  5. interesting opportunity..

in conjunction with a regular race weekend at Summit Point Motorsports Park (Summit Point WV, 70 miles west of DC),  the SCCA is hosting a cars and coffee event outside Turn 8 on the track on sunday morning 4oct.  hot rods, vintage, euro, race cars all welcome...any car really.  the event includes free admission to watch the races that day.

i will be racing that weekend in the E30 325is, but may bring the M2 also for the cars and coffee part of it.

mark your calendars!  i will post more details when i get them.

Do you mean Sunday morning 6 Oct?

  6. I am upgrading my suspension trying to determine my best options.  I purchased the car last December with what I believe to be a mostly stock suspension.  The sway bars are 16mm, the front struts are marked 1-0211-27-314-0 Boge.  The shocks are Monroe.  Not sure about the springs.  The wheels are 6J X 15 ET 12 turbine.

So far I've ordered Bilstein HD and I know I will replace the wheels.  I'll get some sway bars too. I'd like to go with 13" but I know tire availability can be a problem.  I am after a stock look (I'd go with steel wheels as long as they weren't heavier than an engine block) and I like th Panasports.  I'd like to have aggressive street ride that won't beat me to death.

So looking at my car pictured below can anyone identify what I have and/or make suggestions?

  8. Anita and I attended the Tidewater Chapter picnic yesterday.
We bought the Manila 68 1600 in 1996 when Anita and I took a train to Plattsburg NY. We took the car to Montreal for the weekend, then drove home. We sold the car to Jason D. in 2009. I saw it today for the first time since 2009. Jason ...found and installed an original Alpina FI motor and dog leg five speed gear box and put it in the 1600. He also put in an original Alpina interior. Patina indeed! I bought the blue car last December...

  9. Mission accomplished. I flew to Providence RI and drove the car home Wednesday--575 miles. It ran like a champ. Jim and Jill, thank you for saving this car. Without your blood, sweat, and tears this car would still be in the field in New York.

1971 Riviera 2002 2572059 Black interior. Matching numbers (121 head)all stock except for 32/26 Weber, headers, and Alpina style wheels. It was the only car I considered that looked as good in the pics as it did in person.

  10. you've withdrawn from the deal, right? That's what I would do...see if the "kid from NOLA" really exists, or whether the seller is trying to give you buck fever and have you up your bid.

As has been pointed out, there are plenty of 2002s out there (88,000 were imported), and this is one you have't even seen in person...The story you tell makes me highly suspicious of the seller...

Two things you need when you're hunting for a specific make/model/color of car: patience, and the ability to convince the seller that he needs to sell it worse than you need to buy it.

Took me 2 years (in 1978!) to find a nice non-metallic paint, sunroof 02 with A/C--admittedly before the internet--but I found it less than a mile from my house. More recently it took me 6 months on the internet to find a two year old Nissan Frontier V6 4x4 with a six speed. But I found one--at a dealership and dickered down the price over a two week period.

So be patient and walk rapidly away from anyone who tries to snooker you...and that's what this sounds like. Let us know if he calls you back in a week or two to let you know the other deal fell through, and are you still interested...

    cheers

    mike

  11. Too bad many sellers are not 100% honest. Especially when travel is involved. I cannot tell you how many disappointing trips I have made wasting both vaulable time and money to look at cars that were misrepresented.

I have been searching for a roundie project in the Southeast going on three months now. The search continues (hint hint)! Eventually the right car turns up. It always does. The hunt is almost like having a second job!

My sentiments exactly! We should talk, no kidding. I've found some decent cars (roundies) but not exactly what I'm looking for. Odds are we are not looking for the same car. I've decided not to settle (been there done that), so I'm looking for Inca or Golf (maybe Verona or Riviera), black interior 73 or older. $12k or less. I'm going to look at a local car, but, it's Agave. What are you looking for, i.e., what are your preferences?

  12. Cleanse the wound and move on. Plenty of 02s and non-snookering sellers out there.

I disagree. There is plenty of junk out there. Plenty of 74-76 2002's. Not many what I would call a clean driver between $7k and $12k There are more cars over $15000 than under. I don't want a garage queen. I've run into many more furtive sellers than straight shooters. Several sellers don't even know what they have.

  13. Several weeks ago I saw a car in Atlanta advertised by an independent dealer for $10,995. I talked to the dealer about the car and saw many pictures on their website. I didn't think the car was worth that much so I decided to wait. The day before yesterday the dealer emailed me with a reduced price of $8500, so I emailed him back expressing interest. Yesterday I made an offer of $7000 that was refused, the seller sticking to his original price of $8500 as his lowest number because there was "strong interest" at $8500 which, IMHO, translates to nobody made a full price offer. I thought about it over night and decided that I'd pony up because the car was one of the two colors I wanted and it had A/C (a requirement of my wife). The seller called me, I asked if he was selling the car for $8500, he said he was, I agreed to $8500. I asked for right of refusal once I inspected the car. We also agreed to a PPI and a $500 deposit. I asked him to Fed Ex me two signed buyers orders (one for me and one for him) He said he had to check with his partner, but he would call me back. So he calls back and according to his partner "a kid from NOLA had a PPI done on the car today." He wanted to wait until Monday to confirm our deal. I asked if they had agreed on price. He said no, and he wasn't sure if the kid had financing! I told him several times that I was paying cash. I told him what he was telling me made no sense. We agreed on price, his price, we should have a deal. He rationalized that he didn't want the kid to lose his PPI fees. I smelled a rat, got pissed, and told him I was out. He told me he was selling the car for $8500 (I asked for a reason) and he asked me for a deposit, without hesitation, I agreed.

Who is the moron here? Me for getting steamed? Or him for trying to play both ends against the middle? If it's me, I can take it...LOL.
