  1. Can you do me a favor and measure from the inside of that arch to the beginning of where the arch starts? basically how much width the arch gives you out from body?

I'm looking to run 16x9 et15 wheels in the rear and need to figure out if those arches are wide enough.

I's appreciate it if you can!

    Thanks

I'll do that when I get home. I'm at the gym right now. I never measured it haha

So I measured the flare from inside of the stock arch to the end of the mk1 arch and it was exactly 2 inches. In my opinion,I don't think you will be able to run that spec with these arches unless you camber the shiz out of them. I have 16x8 et0 and those are pushing it. I mean you can make them work. I might try to go wider myself. 16x9 et0 rear and 16x8.5 et-3 front.

Hey thanks! I think I should be able to make them fit with the right setup and some adjustments

No prob bro. Glad I could help some.

  2. Thanks for the quick response guys. I was looking at the 99 dollar wire welder and it seems to have some good reviews. I've never welded before and wanted to get something to learn with that was not too expensive. Here is the link to the ome im looking at http://www.harborfreight.com/catalog/product/view/id/4106/category/434/ I was wondering if this would be sufficient enough to put my wheel arches on and what other jobs this may take on.

  4. Is there a cheap place to get the plastic sheet you used to make your paint booth? Would like to be able to isolate some of the garage like that.

Just go to Home Depot or Lowes. It's just painters plastic. Costs like 3 bucks for a 9x12 roll.

  5. Not sure about pricing but my friend has a set of GAZ coil overs in his E21, and another friend has them in his Skoda.

They are a good coil over , and as for "how low" my friend with the E21 can literally put his car flat on the ground and still lower the perches, so it can go lower than you will want to/or should be going.

Finally a reply! Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. The folks at GAZ said it cost €100 for shipping to the US and €795 for the set up with my supply of strut tube housing which comes out to 1011.61 USD. I don't know how much it would cost on my end to shit out my strut tubes though.

I'm glad that you can lower the car a good amount. Thanks for the reply. You wouldn't happen to know the weight of them would you?

  7. This thread is great!

That car in the first few pictures looks like mine when I first got it 10 years ago! Going to have to look into the arches, I was trying to go flare-less for the look but 3-400 turbo m10 WHP might need alittle flare

infact, looking back at those pics, what is your vin? I'm telling you did you buy this from the same person I got mine from?? scary how they are the same car. I got mine from a original owner here in Georgia, lady bought it new in 73 and drove it to work as a school teacher for a few years then parked it. 73k original miles.

Thanks for the love!! I actually bought the car from a retired fellow serviceman in Myrtle Beach SC. He bought it in Germany and had it shipped, so he says. the arches really add a nice touch to the car without the bubbly turbo flares. They look nice but not my taste.

  8. np I'm going to check my email. Hopefully give you a call tomorrow is that the same place you picked up the flares from?

Aiights. Yeah it's the site I posted in this thread for folks that were interested in the arches. Really good people. They have lots of stuff if you wanted to try other vehicle arches also. I just went with the golf arches since it's been done on the 02 and other vehicles.

Ordered the passenger rear today. Hopefully it works out. thanks again.

No prob. Did you order all 4?

  10. looking good! lots of progress can't wait to see what you do with the arches.

Are you going to have it painted or do it in the garage? nvm looks like you are painting it. I'm in the same boat so if you have any questions!

How much are you selling the diamonds for? I'm looking for some 16's

Some inspiration :) just got my first coat on this morning.

Yeah I'm going to attempt to do the bodywork and paint at home... I think. I can paint my car at a paint booth on Fort Stewart. It costs like 75 bucks for the day 8-6. Thats prolly going to be my option. What compressor/paint gun are you working with?

As for the Diamond wheels, I'm just looking to get what I paid for them being that they are 2 or so months old with one box open and never mounted tires. The only thing is that I would need to mount the tires so I can put them on the car to get the ride height I want and mount the arches up this weekend. Were you looking for tires too? I got a set of 205/40/16 Falken 512's that were going on.

  11. So not really much to update on the car except that I've stripped the paint a little more. So close to finally being done with this part of the process. I don't know if I'm enjoying this much.

Bought some of this POR-15 Epoxy Putty for all the trim holes so I don't have to weld anything. I hope it works good. Comes in 2 bars that you mix together in equal portions.

Got some paint stripper from Lowes that worked really good for less than the aircraft paint remover.

Here is the after pic later that night. perdy good...

The inside of the trunk was a little hard to strip for some reason. There are some thick parts and no matter how much of that paint stripper I laid on it wouldn't come off that easy.

It's these textured areas that wont budge.

Started working on the top of the fenders and part of the engine bay until I remove the engine.

    Stripper doin it's job.

Surprisingly found this under the supposed original paint of the car. would like to get a new sticker.

Lots of putty hidden underneath the paint...

Removed front and rear glass tonight and ended up with more gifts of rust. My buddy even gave me a gift of a broken front windshield from getting too excited and pushing too hard. Now I need a new one.

Well that's it for now. More updates this weekend. I want to cut the fenders for sure this weekend. Also strip the interior. It's going to be fun trying to figure all this on the fly.
