So i started disassembling the M42 motor to get it ready for the swap.

I sold my 96 328is for $4,000 3 years ago with 166,000... but the body was kinda rough, interior was really nice. I wouldn't say you are that far off. There are lots of people that will always offer you half of what you are asking on Craigslist. (just to see if you will bite) i was offered 2,000 the day before i sold it.

Im doing the M42 swap, have the motor... Just need a good trans to bolt to the motor.

I would say maybe the M42,

Im doing that swap with efficiency in mind. And i am sure if you used a modern exhaust system... i.e. "stock BMW" cat and muffler, as far as i know that would probably run pretty clean.

I will definitely be contacting you about the mounts as soon as i can afford them. excited to get the motor on a stand and start going through it. going to try and do all new seals and gaskets.

So i went and picked up the M42 drivetrain... except when i got there, it was an automatic transmission.

I ended up just buying the motor, drive shaft and diff.

From the research ive done, i think that the auto trans has its own ecu. Is this correct will i be able to use the wiring harness/ecu with a manual trans?

Or am i screwed?

Also what are my options for a five speed manual trans?

I will definitely be subscribing to this thread. I am happy to see that someone is going the "slammed" route. i would like to go super low someday... but im currently trying to do a M42 swap, so the money is wrapped up in that for a while.

yeah ive been watching some others M42 threads. I can get the oil pan new through wholesale at work. i guess im going to have to go junk yarding for the intake manifold i guess.
