Phwooooaar... well if ever we needed proof that Original is King, then these pics nailed it!!
Now just how awesome does that Malaga 2002 look on those stock steelies with stainless steel caps?Absolutely stunning - well done Sir, I salute you...
-
I'm guessing it's an early VW Golf II wheel, in which case the ET is going to be wrong for an 02...

CONGRATS Paul...!!
Well done. Keep up the good work - we need to save all these super rare VIN 150XXXX's... -
Hejsan Ola,
You're clearly having waaaay too much fun on Knutten! :-)
Nice and tidy through Tandstiften. It's been a fair while since I've tracked any of my 02's, but it's time for a comeback. Actually I'm even going to one up myself, as I've just signed up for my first ever hillclimb! The anticipation is just killing me now - can barely wait...
I can see in your signature that you have a H&R Cup Kit fitted to your 02. May I ask how you find it? Not just on track either, but also on public road.
-
I'll be there - naturally...
I was there in 2002, 2006 and 2011, so obviously I'll be back again for the fourth Bav Tour.
Bringing two cars as well - my Verona rot '73 BMW 2002 which I took part in for all three previous tours and then of course my Derby grau '66 BMW 1600-2 too. Seems fitting to bring a 50 year old 02 to the 50th anniversary of the 02...

Thx Gents!
Much appreciated...
Since I'm in Europe, I suppose it makes sense that I try Uli in Germany first.
Should that fail, I'll be right onto Pierre instead... -

Two new pitman arms and the tie rod, an alignment by a friend, John Gertsen, who races a 2002ti in the Danish Historics pre-71 class, and she certainly feels a lot sharper again.
Such a joy piling on those miles on small twisty backroads...

Well sticking to the norm Steve, I will immediately sit up and pay attention when you don't agree with me...
The short answer : I clearly learned something new today. Thx...
The slightly longer answer : The 2002 was fased out in Europe at the end of '75. After that we only had the entry-level BMW 1502 which slotted in well below the newly introduced BMW E21. In all honesty, I'm no expert on 1502's and I can't comment on whether they had "BMW" written on the valve cover or whether they had the roundel.
Hmmm... guess I'd better dive in and do a bit more research...

Steve, it's not about the colour of the air filter housing!
Oh no... not one bit. It's all about that door mirror!
The swan-neck mirror was only used up to and including '68. So how did it end up on such a thoroughly original and unmolested 2002 from '70??
Hmmmmm.... -
Another lovely story.
It's always good when we manage to get the younger generation interested... Geeeez, I sound old when I say that!!
And what a great looking 2002. When as clean as this one, Nevada is truly a stunning colour. We sadly didn't get many in this colour in Europe though...
-
Thx for sharing!
Nice story and what a beautiful little 1600-2...
-
Hmmmm... throttle wide open on U-turns you say??
Yup! Happens all the bloody time for me too. Left or right doesn't seem to make much difference in my case though.
And I've checked - engine mounts are OEM rubber and indeed in fine fettle.Guess it might have more to do with a momentary lapse of brain activity linked to my juvenile adrenalin seeking character and not least a rather heavy right foot...

As for 02's the change from the smooth valve cover to ribbed valve covers happened at some point mid '67. There's apparently no exact cut-off date, as I have seen fairly late '67s with smooth valve covers and then we have Cris's earlier '67 which has the ribbed valve cover.
Furthermore, while I didn't bother checking the smooth valve cover on my '66, I did instead check the spare smooth valve cover I have in my stash, and it did not have a date stamp.
When it comes to the ribbed valve covers, they were of course used for the remainder of 02 production from roughly mid '67 and right up to the last one rolled off the production line. To my knowledge these should all have "BMW" written on them, as the valve covers with the roundel on came later.
As for date stamps, it's bizar that Cris's ribbed valve cover is date stamped as early as 04.67, when many other ribbed valve covers don't have the date stamp. All logic is out the window!

What a beauty!
I'm biased of course, but oh how those early unadorned early 1600-2's just look beautiful in all their simplicity.Glad you got her out of storage - now go enjoy her on some sweeping back roads...

Hi Paul,
Thx for all the info you've provided above and not least for the pics you sent me. Thoroughly exciting stuff!!
I've now duly added your great little '66 to the registry. Same link as the one I provided above. I hope you approve?
Paul, to answer your question, your 1600-2 is indeed the 5198th BMW 02 ever produced. There is however no system in the VIN's as to where the cars were sent. I've never before heard of anything significant to the 105 prefix. Would love to learn more though if anyone can verify this...
Paul, i also sincerely hope you will make use of the list of '66 oddities that I have tried to assemble in the third post of The '66 Bible on the 02forum. If you're looking for originality, I'd like to believe that it could be of help to you.
-
That is indeed very interesting!
Would be cool to find out if this really is a true '66 with the early VIN 150XXXX, or a later VIN 151XXXX which started production in mid-November '66.
If anyone actually contacts the seller and manages to get a VIN out of him, I would be very interested to hear from you. I'm always looking to add more VIN 150XXXX finds to the '66 Registry.
Anyone with more info feel free to contact me on email: andersbilidt (a) hotmail dot comThx!
-
WOW!!
This is amazing Paul. I always get ridiculously excited when another VIN 150XXXX is unearthed - yup, I'm really that much of a nerd... This is an early 1600-2 that was still not known to me.
If you want to learn more about all the oddities of these first 02's, please have a closer look at "The '66 Bible" on the 02forum.
http://www.02forum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=8603
It's of course a work in progress and as such not exhaustive, but I believe I've managed to gather the vast majority of what marks out a VIN 150XXXX from all the other 02's.
Paul, I would love to add your 1505198 to the '66 Registry. Would that be alright with you? And if so, could you possibly send me the production date of the car and the original colour? Both pieces of info should have been included in the certificate of authenticity which you received from BMW Classic. Also, would you please send me a good quality picture of your 1600-2?
Feel free to contact me directly on email: andersbilidt (a) hotmail dot comThx!!

Hey Chris,
I don't know about the shipping or the importing into the States, but I'm currently in Denmark. Should you require any help over here before shipping commences, please feel free to contact me. Always happy to help a fellow enthusiast... ;-)

Awesome work Ray!!
This will be sooo cool in the garage. Uhmmm... and in the study. And the bedroom. And living room. Kitchen too? Hell yeah!
-
Well, I don't know if the headrest was a factory option or dealer-supplied, but here is the page from the 1967 book that includes it.
Best,
Kit
They were indeed a factory option on those early 02's.
Here's a decent pic of one that was fitted to a beautiful Condorgelb BMW 1600-2 Vollcab...
That tiny embossed BMW roundel at the very bottom edge of the headrest gave me a serious hard-on...
I just know that now someone is going to ask what the vollcab looked like...
So here you go:
And just to get back on topic, pleeeeeeazz save any '66 or '67 you ever come across!! They are SO rare and SUCH an important part of 02 history...
-
Certainly worth a shot considering the insane prices these Italian market turn signals are achieving nowadays...!!

2002 Beauty Shots
in BMW 2002 and other '02

Been a fair while since I posted in here last time, but always enjoy coming back to this thread - soooo much goodness...
I should really contribute more myself, but there's nothing new with my trusty ol' Verona 2002 and my Derby 1600-2 is in pieces right now.
I do however have this of my hillclimb / tracktool 2002, which I spent a fair amount of time and $$ resurrecting this summer after being laid up with a blown engine for almost 4 years.
