  1. Like so many others have said, it's a matter of personal style, and there is more general interest in a car that is closer to original, appearance wise. This car looks like a decent start towards a resto-mod, but the smoked lights just don't fit it. The lack of an air filter is worrisome, though, what does the oil look like, and why didn't they find a filter? What else important might they have skimped on?

  2. Some vehicles get salvage titles for unknown reasons. Usually it's because it was in an accident or stolen and stripped and the insurance company felt it would be easier/cheaper to total the car rather than have it repaired. This decision isn't entirely up to the insurance commpany, either. The owner of the car can, if they wish, fight to keep the car or have the insurance company repair it. This varies to some extent by state.

I personally have no problems with buying and insuring a car with a salvage title, but it depends on why it was salvaged. Usually, the damage is not well-repaired, and there are lots of little parts missing. If the price is right, the car can be a deal for someone who wants to either use it the way it is, or work on it and fix it up correctly. Quickly reselling is never a good idea.

This sounds like a fun car, go for it if you want it!

    Hope this helps,

  3. Are you positive one of the wheels isn't bent, even by a little? A good way to check for any wobbles is to jack up the front and spin the tires one at a time, with a zip tie tied to a milk crate or similar stationary object and the end close to the tire.

Hope this helps, or is even interesting...

  4. On the subject of body injury, I was rear ended in my E34 525i by a young girl in an older Blazer while sitting at a stoplight. There was minor damage on my car, the rear bumper coover was shattered, and there was a small ding on my trunk lid. I felt fine after the accident, which happened on Thursday morning.

Friday evening my back was a little stiffer than usual, bit I didn't worry about it. Saturday afternoon it was really bothering me, and by that night, I couldn't lay down without pain and was unable to stand up straight. By Sunday I was trying all the Tylenol I could get, with no improvement.

I got my hands on some Tylenol 3, which helped a little. The next day I visited my doctor, who sent me for x-rays, which were negative. I was sent to get an MRI, which showed a herniated bottom disc, L5-S1, and two badly bulging discs above that.

I asked my orthopaedic surgeon about whether the injury could have been caused by the accident, and his reply was "In a court of law, I would have to testify that I did not examine you before the accident, but that your injuries are consistent with the type of accident you described to me."

Bottom line, get your butt to a doctor to be sure you're okay. Back and neck injuries are not always as obvious as mine were, so if you feel any stiffness in your back, arms or neck, get it checked out as it could be something you should be worried about in the future.

  5. I too prefer the 13" wheels on a 2002.

For what it's worth, I have E21 basketweave alloys on my car, with 205/60/13 tires. They fit over the big brakes in front (5-series, etc) and also have no fitment problems with the tie rods. I've also never had any problems using them with rubbing on the fender wells in a few other 2002s. Not always the fanciest or the rarest, but hey, they work.....

  6. Thanks for all the great pictures, keep 'em coming!

Of course, my green 2002ti made it....easily. It also holds the Oktoberfest long distance record; Pacifica, CA to Waterville Valley NH and back in 1997. Didn't take the shortest route, either, but it sure was fun, going back in under four days. And that was with a 4 speed and 3:90.1 diff....

  7. I know that myself and a few other carbed cars had problems with vapor lock, in hot parking lots or when crossing the higher elevations. I had an electric fuel pump ready, which I used for O'Fest 2002 in Colorado.

I also had a RF wheel bearing start making noise when I first passed through Dayton. Now I'm home safe and sound, and it's still making noise. I'll replace it soon...

  8. I have two E30 basketweaves, 6.5x14, with 205/60/14 Yokohama AVS ES100 tires on them. Tires have about 3/16" of tread and look evenly worn, but one has a nail in it. There are no center caps, and all edges look good, with only one gouge on one edge. These came from a decent looking 325es that was in a local junkyard after the right side had an unpleasant meeting with a concrete barrier. These two wheels were on the left side which was undamaged. I'm asking $150 or best offer plus shipping from Naperville, IL.

Please contact me for pictures or other info.

    Thanks!

  9. What a poorly done pos. It's a shame that someone spent so much on the car and it looks like this. Waste of paint. $2k, maybe $2500 tops unless someone buys it who doesn't care about whether the work, body or mechanical, is done right. It's not a rare car at all, though the color isn't common.

The silver touring for sale in the fs section is a much nicer car, much rarer, and also unique. For like only 6 or 7 grand

  10. Why would Webers be undriveable if they and the engine are set up and tuned properly? This is the key. One needs to have the correct setup, and velocity stacks (air horns), and find way to fit enough of a filter on it, which also means a tii booster.

I have 40 DCOES that are no problem whatsoever, wind or cold. They've started with no problems in 100 degree heat and -15 cold. When cold, it takes two pumps to prime them first.

Yes, they're noisy, but then '02's aren't exactly quiet newer cars to begin with. And it's such a wonderful noise!

From talking with people with injected engines, it's almost a tossup with power, and the injection systems aren't exactly a dirt cheap bolt-on mod that you'll be able to do in an afternoon without a lot of extra work. Economy might be more closely affected by the weight of the driver's foot and gearing than anything else.

It really depends on what road you want to go down; either way you'll spend a good chunk of change and work getting it right. My personal preference on an older car like an '02 would be Webers.
