Small world, I take my 5er to Mike. I have taken the '72 over there once. He doesnt like working on these things too much he says. He did tell me to replace the valve cover gasket and to a valve adjustment. I did that, and tis when I got a leak to spring. He told me after I adjusted my valves he would do a bit of a tune up and see if he couldnt get her to run tip top. He actually re-built this engine for the PO about 6 years ago. I will try out some of the RTV today. Any idea what oil I should use to replenish?

  3. SOUND LIKE THE TIMING CHAIN COVER IT NOT EVEN WITH THE HEAD AND CAUSING IT TO LEAK. CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TIMING COVER DOESENT HAVE A GAP BETWEEN THE HEAD AND THE VALVE COVER.

Its not the timing chain cover thats leaking( I dont think, I will check it today tho), I was trying to describe there the leak was in relation to things already known. Upper left corner (driver side we will say on LHD car) of valve cover where it meets the head. Thanks for all the help!

  5. I was thinking that, I have a spare engine, so a warped valve cover is not the end of the world, as I have another. The only thing is that one of the studs is for whatever reason oversized. The valve cover that is on it right now has a hole bigger to accomidate, but the other one I have has uniform holes alll the way around. If a warped valve cover is the issue, (1) how can I find that out and (2) how would I get out the bigger stud and replace with smaller stud? Is there any advantage to this larger stud?

  7. Trying to locate an oil leak, we replaced the valve cover gasket and replaced with new. Installed dry, and had to scrap off a large amount of what appeared to be some RTV put on by previous owner. Took it out today for the first day of hard running, and it leaked like a civ from that spot. Any fixes out there other than smearing loads of RTV at the seal of where the Valve cover meets? It seems to be leaking from intake side towards the timing chain.

  9. Over at bimmerforums, this was a similar question and this was the response it got:

There's a member that bought a set that was marketed here in the states but, made in Aus. 15 minutes of run time with a Schrick cam and 5 of the rocker arm pads are wiped out. The motor was assembled by a reputable builder here in Nor Cal.

    Watch out!

End quote. Hah, dont think those should go on anyones christmas list!

  10. It will work on your 2002, most ( including that one ) Momo knobs have a set of rubber adapters that slide over the threaded part of the shift shaft, three small allen set screws lock it to the shaft and the threaded aluminum collar ( seen at the bottom of the knob ) spins on to hide the set screws.

The only real problem with that particular knob is that it is designed for a shaft that can not rotate ( like ours do ) you need to find one that is symmetrical ( think cue ball ) unless you have done the Z3 (I believe that's correct ) short shift that keeps the shaft from rotating.

Thanks! Ok, well, I like it alot, and I bought it. I appreciate the assistance. The rotating thing doesnt bother me that much. I never get too animated when I drive. Appreciate the info.

    Regards,

    Chris
