  1. Karen, I'm sorry if my post came across as snobby or if you felt that i was attacking your integrity. I have never met you and you may be a great person, but based on some of the comments that you made in your earlier posts, I guess I took offense. You say that the oil filter was ten years old but I changed the oil my self 4 times because i did it every 3K miles and i only put close to 12K miles on it while i owned it. I sold the car about 8-9 years ago so unless I was the last one to ever change the oil before your mechanic did...I don't see how that even adds up to ten years.

You also posted that your mechanic told you that the previous owners mechanic's had ripped them off, well i hate to tell you this but I think you might be the one who has gotten ripped off by your mechanic. Let's say you paid 5-6K for the car. That means that you have put at least that much on top of the sale price to justify your low price of 11.5K. If all your mechanic did was replace the few things that you listed in your last post, then I would have to say that you definitly got ripped off. A shift nob, properly grounding the fuel gage, putting a new radiator (should not have needed it since it had a new 320i radiator when i owned it), and replacing a fuel tank and some rubber should not have cost 5-6K of parts and labor.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this car and if the price was right, i would still go after it. It's got great personality and is a blast to drive. Hope you find a good home for it.

  2. Ok, I feel like I need to put my 2 cents here. I used to own this car about 8-9 years ago and I'm a little irritated by this situation. Let me give some history. I bought this car from a guy in Livermore CA about 10 years ago. He was the second or 3rd owner and he completely redid the car for his wife. He basically put all new suspension (blisteins, eibachs, new bushings, etc) rebuilt the top end of the engine, put new interior and had the car repainted in a custom color. The paint job was done right (engine and interior were out of the car).

I bought the car for around 4K in 2001 i think and I did all the maintenance (oil changes and fixing little things here and there). I sold the car after about a year and a half to pay off some bills. I sold it to a high school girl in Napa who's father bought it for her and she apparently thrashed the car. I know this because I always regreted selling this car and for years I browsed the classifieds, hoping that I would find it for sale again. I saw it on craigslist a couple of years ago and drove out to Napa that day with cash in hand to buy it. She was asking around 6k for the car and I figured that it was my fault for selling it to her for around 4K years before.

When i saw it in person, I almost cried, because she had let the car go so badly. She admits that she was not very good at driving stick and she crashed the car in front (bumper and grills needed to be replaced) and backed into something as well (rear bumper and rear section under trunk lid had a crease) She claimed it had always been parked in her garage but that was a lie because the top of the back seat was cracked from sun exposure. Also, some kid on a bike crashed into the driver side door and left some huge scratches on the paint. I then took it for a test drive and when I turned on the blinker, smoke stated to come out of the steering column. The car ran like crap and the brakes pulled to the left…it was a complete mess.

Needless to say I had to walk away from purchasing the car I had always wanted back because she would not budge on the price. She had gotten insurance money for the accidents that she had in the car but used it to buy an Exterra (which is what was really parked in the garage the whole time). At that point it was probably a 2-3K car to me (mostly for sentimental reasons).

She finally was able to sell it to Leigh (the cute girl that frenchee or Julio was going to take to the prom) and she really saved that car. Leigh took it to a local mechanic and got some things fixed on it. When she put the ad on here I had to call her to see about maybe buying the car back. I understood that she could not let it go less for what she paid for it (around 5K or so) but she asked me to come out and take it for one last drive. I met her in Oakland and we drove around the Berkeley hills (what a blast). The car ran almost as good as when I owned it but it still had the dents and scratches. The driveline felt tired and second gear synchros still scratched on quick shifts. I wished Leigh good luck on the sale and hoped that it would find a good home.

I guess this Karen person bought the car from Leigh and I am having a really hard time seeing where the 11K price tag can be justified. Unless she had the engine and tranny and rear end replaced or rebuilt. Even then it would be maybe an 8K car. The exterior and interior look unchanged. Maybe Karen put another 6-7K into the car for maintenance issues and feels like that plus the price she paid for the car get’s it to 11K. I don’t know, it just bothers me. Knowing the car the way I do, I would not pay anymore than 3K for it and that is generous because I have history with it. So buyer beware.

  3. Hey Sislane, the car that was stolen was not mine. Like i mentioned in my first post, i just saw it on craigslist, i don't even know that guy. That picture that you posted of my car is a totally different car. I kept it bone stock and eventually sold it because i didn't want to modify such an original car. I think you got confused.

  4. So, I finally got around to doing some stuff to my car (project blog) which included a much needed tuneup. I took it for a spin around the block and that little 1.6 liter has some kick to it. Only problem was that when I threw it into second and gave it some gas, I heard a machine gun sound underneath the car. The next day I looked under the car and I saw that my guibo was just in shambles. I picked up a new one and got ready to put it in.

Here is my question, I have the sliding type driveshaft that has 3 guibos (instead of guibo/driveshaft/u-joint/driveshaft/u-joint/ etc) In order to get my old flex disk off, will removing the center bearing support allow me to get the clearance I need since it wont bend like a U-joint?

    Thanks in advance

  5. Well, I finally had some time to work on the little bastard. It's been really hard with a newborn baby. Anyway, I noticed that my halfshafts were leaking fluid which also meant that my car was blessed with the type that are a PINA clear boot not the CV type. Instead of trying to put new boots, i decided to "upgrade" to CV joint halfshafts. I went to Double 02 and bought some used ones for cheap. I used all new hardware.

I also replaced my old rusty exhaust with a new stock system from the downpipe back. I went with the Ansa. It sounds ok and it was alot easier than I thought it would be. here is a pic that shows both.

  6. Hey guys, well it turns out that my 69 1600 is an early one. My vin# is 1567083. That means that I have the old 2 piston brake calipars. Well I noticed that one of my brakes felt like it was dragging so I jacked up the car so I could do a brake system bleed. I noticed that my driver side wheel was kind of hard to turn by hand even after the bleed. My question is. Should I just get new flex lines? I would like to work with newer parts but the calipars are hard to find. What if I wanted to upgrade to the 4 pistons calipars? Would I have to change my master cylinder too? Also my driver side rear brake didn't really bleed. When I turned the nipple nothing really came out.

Question #2. I also got everything that I need to do a tune up on the engine. But, I noticed that the car is running rich (smells like gasoline and spark plugs are black) but I don't know if I should try to tune the carb before I put all the new parts in (air cleaner, spark plugs, wires, points, etc), will I just end up mucking up all those new parts? Also, how do you tune a carb when you don't have a tach? I have the original solex 36-40.

Sorry if some of these questions are stupid but I'm trying to learn as I go. I also started a project blog if you're intersted. Thanks in advance guys.

  7. Okay, so I want to start by saying THANK YOU to everyone who has put their 02 cents on my project so far, you guys are great. This is not my first BMW I've had two previous 2002's, I'll include pics of those as well.

Where it began with the 1600:

I finally convinced the wifey to let me look for an old 2002 that I could use as a daily driver. She said as long as she get's to drive it once and a while it's all good. I found a 1600 on craigslist (this is starting to sound like Azee's blog) so I drove out to Oakland to look at it. The owner spoke very little english but fortunatly, I speak spanish also. He said he had bought the car about 2 years ago at an estate sale with the intention of restoring it. Money got tight and so he put it on craigslist. I put it on a trailer and took it home the very next day. I started to clean it out and I found paper work that tied the car to the original owner (he bought the car new in Oakland in 1969 and kept it until 2005).

The car has some rust issues as you can see in the pics below, I think I will just replace the trunk lid but everything else will get some good ol elbow grease. I plan on repainting it the original color.

The vin# is 1567083 and it has original black plates. Car is virtually unmolested.

  8. Jerry, you are correct, this was the one on craigslist in Oakland with the rust on the trunk. The guy that was selling it bought it at an estate sale when the original owner passed a couple years ago. And I will definitely be at Palo Alto in May...It's been about 5 years since i've been to one of those. Hope to meet many of you guys there.

  9. WOW, you guys are amazing. Thanks soo much for all the feedback. I will start a project thread. I will update with a VIN# and some more pics when I go home for lunch. Another note, I found that this car has not only been a California car it's whole life, it's been a Berkeley/Oakland car the whole time. I'm thinking I will end up trying to do a restore instead of doing mods now (thanks for setting me straight).

  10. Hey everyone, my name is Rudy and I just bought myself a 1969 1600 chamonix. I was looking through some paper work and found that the original owner bought the car in 1969 and owned it until he passed in 2005. The car has some rust but it's mostly on the trunk lid. It's virtually unmolested. I've owned a couple 2002's in the past and was wondering if anyone recomends any upgrades that I can do to give the little 1.6 liter some more hps. My plan for the car is to repaint it (original of course) and maybe put some lowering springs and supe up the engine a little so that I can use it as my daily driver. Other than that I want to leave it alone. I'm open to any coments, suggestions. Thanks.
