  1. Jus a heads up guys, this is a flip.  This was posted about a month and a half ago on craigslist for about 3K.  It was posted only for a few hours and when I talked to the owner, he said that there was already someone there to buy the car.  I remember saying to myself "I hope this guy doesn't flip it".  Sure enough a new set of tires later and presto, there it is on craigslist for a lot more.  There are some really good aspects of the car and changing the headlights back to original shouldn't be that hard...but I just cant see myself contributing this guy's flip scheme.

  2. Sorry about that Conserv, what I meant to say was that my thinking was that I might be able to find a better deal outside of the bay area and I'm willing to travel to get the right deal.  But you're right, I need to travel for the right car.  Patience is a virtue that I have not been blessed with.

    Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a mild project and found this one just south of Portland.  I live in the Berkeley California area and was wondering if there was anyone on the FAQ that could check this one out for me before I drive 12 hours north with a trailer.  I'm intrigued by some of the subtle hints that this thing has some performance mods on it that I would normally do as well.  Thanks in advance!

  4. Hey guys, I'm selling my 02 out of sheer necessity. If you guys were at the last Bay Area Swap and Show or the East Bay Loop drive, then you've already seen this car in person. Reach out if you have any questions:

Early 68 BMW 1600. Vin number indicates that it was produced in 1967 but registered and titled as a 1968. This car looks completely stock but has internals of a much newer, funner, more reliable model.

Engine is a completly rebuilt 1974 BMW 2002 2.0L M10 motor with piano top pistons, Weber progressive carburetor, 320i radiator (blue bmw coolant), 320i alternator, valve job done 1K miles ago. Ireland Engineering Tii distributor, Header, New Water Pump, New Thermostat

Transmission is a 5 speed Getrag from a 318i, syncros are in great shape (no grinding in any gear). I believe the rear main seal has a small leak and the throw out bearing needs to be adjusted or replaced.

Rear End has the original long neck diff, with 4:11 gears (lots of fun), replaced gear oil 1.5K miles ago

Drive Shaft has new Guibos and center bearing, brake lines have been replaced with steel braided ones

13 inch original wheels with rare original hubcaps, wrapped in brand new Falken perfomance tires

Interior has been re-covered by previous owner, recently stripped out original carpet and layed down new sound deadener throughout before installing Esty carpet kit.

Paint is original Sahara and does not show any signs of respray (except for the rear where it had some minor body work done by previous owner)

Kenwood AM/FM/CD/MP3/USB stereo and Pioneer 6X9's in rear parcel tray.

All lights and electrical items work.

Too much to list, come see in person. 925-321-6736

    Make: BMW

    Model: 1600/2002

  5. I initially resoponded to Tom Jone's write up http://www.bmw2002faq.com/component/option,com_forum/Itemid,50/page,viewtopic/t,294242/

but decided to move my question here.

I just went to double 02 salvage and picked up a replacement fuel pump. They gave me #13 31 1 265 192, but I believe the car currently has a #13 31 1 252 506 style pump, which means that I have the #13 31 1 250 398 107mm long pushrod. I don't want to make another trip to Hayward, so my questions are:

    Can I cut down the 107mm long pushrod to 88mm to make it a #13 31 1 255 727 pushrod?

Should I try to stay with the original style fuel pump or go ahead and use the pin and coil spring style fuel pump? The engine in my car is from a 1974 2002 and it has a 32/36 webber. Shouldn't it have already had the pin and coil spring style fuel pump since the cutover was in 1972?

How important is it to replace the insulator bushings? Again, I don't want to make another trip to Hayward.

    Thanks

  6. Hey guys, I know I'm reviving an old thread, but I just added a 3rd brake light (mostly because my wife got rear ended in the 1600) and I didn't want it to happen again. It was pretty easy. Here is what I did:

    1) Bought a 3rd brake light from a street rod website (rodwox.com)

    2) Made a bracket for the light to mount to out of two wooden rail strips from my son's broken train table and wrapped it in vinyl.

    3) Removed my backseat, removed the rear parcel shelf pad, measured the center, marked it, and made some holes for mounting the bracket.

    4) Mounted the light to the parcel shelf pad and put back in the car. (I used heat shrink tubing for a cleaner look of the wires coming out of the light)

    5) Ran the ground wire from the light to the body and ran the hot wire of the light to the driver side brakelight connection.

I've been driving the car with the 3rd brake light for about a week now and noticed a change in peoples driving habbits behind me. Also I removed the two taillight housings, cleaned the lenses and painted the inside of the housings bright white...big difference in illumination.

  7. With all the talk lately of Sahara being such an "ugly" color, decided it was an appopriate time to take some photos of my car with it's new wheels. I've been running 15" Superlights for a few years, and decided to mix it up at least for a little while with some steelies. While at it I also put on a nice Momo Prototipo steering wheel. Thanks to Blunt for the parts, of course. Agreed that Sahara is subtle and perhaps not as exciting as an Inka or something, but it has really grown on me over the years.

Grover, the stance on your Sahara is perfect. What are you running suspension wise? Do you mind giving the details on how you got that stance? I too have an early sahara and your car has convinced me to repaint in Sahara instead of changing over to a completely different color. I'm in Livermore and I just so happened to buy my 1600 from a guy in El Cerrito.

  8. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. Bill, I was pretty sure that I didn't have connection issue. Low and behold, I cleaned every ground that I could find and even ran a wire between the two lugs behind the gauges and then a wire to a seperate ground. It totally fixed it. The guage now tops out at just a tad over half way and it also fixed my jumpy fuel gauge issue!

Chris (CJ) looked over my car and pointed out some things to fix. I also had the chance to drool over his Fjord 2002. Thanks man, I owe you big time.

    You guys are awesome.

  9. Thanks for all the replies!

Bill.in.mont - The guage does spike ever so slightly when I turn the lights on, but that's it. How do you clean up the grounds? Do I need to pull the guage out and clean it in the back? I cleaned the connection at the sender end (by the fuel pump).

allbim - I will try pointing the IR thermometer at the sending unit. The wikipedia thing went way over my head.

jscaptura1 - Is adjusting the timing as easy as loosening the distributor hold down and turning to advance or retartd? Any suggestions on doing this without a timing gun?

mlytle - The upgraded radiator is about a year old. The previous owner had to replace it because the fan ate the radiator. I changed out the motor mounts to prevent that from happening again. Yes I can see coolant trickling into the radiator from the top hose, but that hose doesn't really seem to expand very much. It's almost as if it doesen't really look like it's moving alot of coolant through there. Is that normal?

mossyboy6 - Yes the heater blows hot, am I supposed to run the fan as well or just have the set to heat? I will try to burp it again when I go home for lunch today.

  10. Ok guys, I'm getting to the end of my rope here. I bought a 68 1600 a few weeks ago. The previous owner(s) put a 1974 2002 engine and an upgraged 320i radiator with new 5 blade fan.

I've noticed that the car started to get hot whenever I would get on the freeway, and since the car has a 5-speed out of a 318i, the RPM's wouldn't really get past 3500. The temp gauge would climb up to the 3/4 mark for about two weeks. Then the other day the guage would climb whether I was around town or on the freeway. Here's what I've done to try to fix the issue:

    1. Replaced the thermostat with a new one (Whaler), made sure it worked in a pot of water first.

    2. Pulled the radiator and flushed it with the garden hose from the bottom to make sure water came out the top.

    3. Pulled the waterpump and checked the insides (looked brand new and spun freely)

    4. Drained the block of all the green fluid. and ran straight water till only clear water came out of the block.

    5. Put it all back together with and filled it with the blue BMW coolant mixed 70/30 water to coolant.

    5. Ran it with the front end jacked up and squeezed the bottom hose with the heater on and the radiator cap off.

The temp guage gradually made it's way all the way to the red. I used an infared gun to measure the heat at both the top hose and the valve cover and neither showed temperture above 120 deg F.

    What am I missing?

  11. The car is in really good condition and there is no rust that i can see. It's been a california car since the day it was bought new. The previous owner did all the ugrades on it. The engine is from a 74 with slightly bigger pistons, and has about 20k since the rebuild. It has a progressive webber 32/36, Tii header. He also installed a 5 speed tranny from a 318i. It has cheesy 15 inch mini cooper wheels, but the tires are good and handle well. It also has a new 320i radiator, fan and alternator. I don't know how to upload pictures so can you PM me your email addy so i can email you some pictures?[/img]
