KFunk, Mike Self, ClayW and anyone else who contributed info for my head gasket replacement. It went successfully. Car started up but no oil pressure. So I took the car in had pump replaced and timing set up correctly (as I've never had it done this well before) by Clay Becker of Becker Motor Works in Cincinnati (513-821-2482). He did a fine job. I'm rollin again!
Thanks again guys.

i disconnected the wires from my pertronix to my blue coil. i forgot which went where. can someone post a pic (preferably) or let me know which goes where? there is one from ignition (?) and 2 from pertronix (red and black). i just don't want to take a chance and connect incorrectly.
thanks

From ClayW
You need:
New Gasket, one plastic zip tie, meat injector syringe, assorted ratchets and sockets, brake parts cleaner, RTV gasket sealer, a torque wrench, new intake and exhaust gaskets and a few hours of time.
Remove the intake and exhaust.
Remove the valve cover.
Set the car to TDC, using the cam TDC mark. Leave car in gear and set the emergency brake.
Remove the upper timing chain cover.
Remove the chain tensioner.
Tie the plastic zip tie through the upper timing gear and chain to hold the chain in place on the gear.
Unbolt the gear and leave it hanging there.
Remove head bolts. Keep them in order so they go back in the same holes.
Remove head. (Careful of the distributor! You can leave it on so you don't have to reset it...just be careful)
Inpect head for cracks and burn spots. Clean it thoroughly.
Clean EVERYTHING thoroughly.
Clean mating surface and pistons.
Use meat injector syringe to remove oil from head bolt holes.
Replace head.
Replace bolts and hand tighten them.
Tighten bolts using torque wrench to specified torque and pattern in the 3 stages.
Replace cam gear.
Remove zip tie.
Replace everything else once you've cleaned it all.
Have a beer and pat yourself on the back.[/b]

that's a sweet looking car there esty

i was wondering the same thing. but then i thought why paint it at all? what better way to keep with the original aluminum look than to leave it bare as it was originally. i am going to sand blast mine and see what it looks like. hopefully it will clean up good enough so it won't have to be painted.

thanks Mike. btw, do check valves go bad?
-
thanks guys. meyere30 i sent you an email.

are they available? while dismantling my engine i had to
cut mine off. it was old, dry and too hard to get off so i
cut it off. it's a steel belted hose. i need to know if i have
to replace it with the same or is there a substitute?
thanks

i wish i could but the car is not drivable. one issue, which i hope is related, is that the oil light will not go off. other wise i would be there for sure.
-
i hope it's not the throttle shaft! i just put a new carbby on less than a year ago! i think it's the gasket. new one on the way.
-
thanks Clay. that's some valuable info there. i'm gonna get crackin on it tonight. i'll keep you's updated as to the progress/problems.
-
i'll look into it and let you know. i have no choice other than ripping it apart tonight. another engine isn't totally out of the question depending on the miles. btw, i sent you an email to your hawaii edu address
-
thanks Kevin. i'll probably have to find someone around here to help or just dive in myself. shop just quoted me $1500. yeah, right. time to get dirty.
-
congrats! your car is one of my very favorites in the entire universe.

Brian: I have a brother-in-law who is a good mechanic who races too. I could ask him about it. He lives near me in Kettering. He's into American iron, but I am sure a head gasket would be doable.
You may be able to drive up and borrow a BMW. I've only got the one, but a few of us have more than one.....
it just wouldn't be the same with out mine. maybe we could all pitch in and change my head gasket! if we all do one thing it would probably only take a half hour! lol

i replaced the oil press. sender within the last year. i have suspected head gasket because of coolant white smoke at start up (of course it could be
valve seals..also). i know how bad it needs to be done but i can't do that by myself and can't pay to have it done at the moment (tryin to but a house. i'm
in a catch 22x2). one guy quoted me over $1000! like i'm gonna do that. so i may have to skip the gtg next weekend. i'm not going to go on a cruise in a 96 passat wagon.
anyone in n.ky/cincinnati want to help replace head gasket? i have garage and i'll compensate.

went to start my car this morning and the oil light won't go off.
plenty of oil in the car but seems to not be getting up into the engine.
the only thing i did recently was take off the
carb spacer (weber 32/36) because of a small crack in it.
i suspected a vacuum leak was causing it to idle poorly.
It did seem to run better over the last few days but last night
when i got home there was gas puddled on the intake mani.
so now i think that the carb gasket is completely wasted
(have gaskets and a new spacer on the way). so could it be since there is not enough pressure built up inside the motor (btw i'n in need of head gasket replacement) that the oil pick up is not pumping oil into the engine? if you think it is bad news let me have it. i have prepared myself.
Mike Self? C.D.? anyone? mommy?
thanks

such as a puff of wind from the flatulence of a small woodland creature.
bwaaaahahahaha! i bet that fixed the problem Mike
-
i think i will take it off until next summer, since the weather is breaking, and see what happens. it may solve some idle issues i've been having.
