  1. Cleaned up the kidney grille a little better.  Here's photos of when I got the car and now.  Pounding out the dents and working the aluminum, sanding and polishing took some time but wasn't all that hard to do.

  2. I use a local guy here in Roseville for typical late model salvage rebuilds, usually painting a portion of a car, three or four panels, etc.  They do good work, nice paint booth, but I'm not sure if they'd want to disassemble/reassemble a 50 year old car with all of its issues.  You also need to consider that most of these guys take pride in their work so to ask them to just do a "decent" job when they usually do very nice work isn't realistic.

If you can send me some good photos of your car I'll see what I can do.

BTW, interesting timing on your part.  I have a '73 Golf tii that I'm going to repaint the top surfaces soon (hood, top, trunk lid).  I'm using single stage paint.

  3. Finish this car.  I need to go through the fuel system and finish up trim and little stuff.  I had it painted about ten years ago and then it got put aside for a while.  I noticed the other day that all the top surfaces were not prepped very well and you can see small divots where the paint was chipped and they didn't sand it down enough.  I decided to repaint the hood, trunk and top this summer .  It's too nice of a car to leave it the way it is.

  4. I had the same problem with these guys last year on my forum.  I manually activate accounts because of the high number of spam accounts so it gives me a chance to check out the user a little bit.  Steve may get too many new accounts to do it manually but it's worth it for me.  They use very generic email addresses that usually have a number after a name, and quite a few times I was able to find other sites that they had scammed by doing an internet search.  A couple of them came up on this site.

At one point they were able to register and VALIDATE their own account, which scared the hell out of me.  I posted warnings all over the site and started checking every way possible they could do that, not finding anything with the software I use or other known problems online.  Then I got lucky when one of their messages said they posted via Tapatalk.  I had it installed on my site and a small number of users really liked it, but as soon as I disabled it the problem went away.  Maybe I had an old version, not sure, but it's gone and I haven't had any issues since.

The best thing everyone can do is pay attention to things that don't feel right and report it to Steve.  He needs to know every time something like this happens.

    Wait.... You can do that?

THE SEARCH FUNCTION WON'T WORK AND IT DOESNT SHOW UP!?!?!?!?! ARRRGGGH

Just kidding. I didn't search for it and won't be. But I am curious if that works! :) The coilovers, that is, not the search function. haha

LOL.  As soon as I saw that I searched for it.  I gave my life savings to some guy in Nigeria too.

I constantly wish there was a forum for my Unimog that was even half as good as this community and forum. I've even thought about posting questions I have on my truck because I know this group would probably figure it out.

And this is why forums exist.  I run my forum on donations only and the members donate enough to pay the bills and some of my time.  I'm not retired on a tropical island.  But, the content and knowledge on the forum is what drives everything, it's why people visit a forum.  Allowing memberships to reduce or remove ads from the site is a reasonable way to "repay" those members and at the same time allow other members to visit for "free", and view ads.  I would guess that the membership fees would need to be at least as much as the ad revenue that those members would normally bring in.

I'm also guessing that you guys could make a fairly short list of users on this site that bring the majority of knowledge and good usable content.

  7. Doesn't sound terminal to me.  I'd do a process of elimination tune-up type check all the basics steps next.  It sounds like it's trying to start and the starter is "banging" when it gets a little slack.  Or, headlight fluid low?

EDIT:  Eh, I listened to the video again and the starter isn't engaged once it tries to start.  Maybe the banging noise was the air cleaner/hood theory and you just need to double-check all the vitals.

  8. I run the e9coupe.com site and the search function on the forum software isn't that great, like most forum software.  I search my own site by using google.  "e9coupe.com search term"

Archiving images with the content is very simple if you can get users to attach them to their posts.  That said, we still have a lot of images hosted on third party servers that disappear.  There's only so much administrators can do.

Looks great! Stopped by your yard the other day and your guys said you had stepped out, sorry I missed you.
Love to circle back and check out your ride in person.

I usually only leave for lunch but if you want to stop by the shop any day except Wednesday after 5:00 I'll be there.  Now that the E3 is running I'm going to move the tii in the "work" garage...

  10. I got a set of used Weber 32/36's, took them apart and they looked really good and clean so I just put them on as-is.  The motor runs WAY better than it did with the stock Zenith's.  I drove the car around last weekend and I think it only needs some minor adjustments.  Man it feels good to finally have the car running decent.

  11. Also managed to de-chrome the hood grilles.  The chrome was peeling off in spots and one grille was broken so I've decided to paint all the grilles on the car and the wheel centers the same color.

I used "Chlorinating liquid" with 10% Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) mixed about 50/50 with water.  Soaked for about three days, brushed off the goo and replaced the solution, then soaked for three more days.  Turned out good and with a little prep will be ready for paint.

  12. It took a little while to get my 32/36 Webers and had to source some linkage parts so I haven't had much to show lately.  This will be a cruiser car so the 32/36's should work fine.  In the meantime I decided to start polishing the Style 5 wheels that are going on the car.  I started out hand sanding but it's so much work I say, "screw that!" and built a wheel lathe to help.  I used a spindle/hub off of a '15 320i and rigged up a bracket to hold a drill motor.  I've gotten one wheel almost done and the lathe works better than expected.
