    Just a gorgeous example!


    For the U.S., because Hoffman Motors Corp specified all-vinyl interiors on imports, Atlantik ‘02’s generally received all-black interiors, which is no great shakes with Atlantik. But your car, with it’s European, and factory-recommended combination of Atlantik with black-and-gray interior, looks sooo much better!

    Thank you for the kind words Steve!

    However, the interior has been tampered with so I have no clue what the original color actually was. But it is all black currently. I can tell by the stitching that the vinyl is not original, not heat welded.

    I’m sorry, I thought the car still had a cloth-and-vinyl interior, like the Italian 1971 1600 recently sold on B.A.T.

     

    The original ribbed cloth changed slightly between 1970 and 1972, and I I don’t know which of those was most likely on a March 1971 example. The differences were minor.

     

    The first three photos below are of the June 1970 paint and upholstery brochure, showing the brochure’s dated rear cover, the concordance of exterior color to interior color, and an image of Atlantik adjacent to specified the S 57/92 upholstery (S = vinyl-and-cloth interiors, K = all-vinyl interiors). The last three photos are of the September 1972 paint and upholstery brochure, showing the dated concordance, the paint samples, and the specified S 70/92 upholstery.

     

    Your car, manufactured in March 1971, is a very late pre-Modell 71. The following month, April 1971, the facelift known as Modell 71 would eliminate the luscious chrome-trimmed dash, short console, and silver-dollar instruments.

    Thanks for these pictures. This helps a lot.

    So the K 68/92 looks something like this (in the picture is '69 Riviera)

    The later style (I suppose it would be post Model 71, which mine is not) S 70/92 looks like this:

    Would you happen to have any reference image of how the S 57/92 should look like, though? Finding seats in those colors will be one hell of a ride, though. Or even matching material to let someone make them.

     

    I have also been wondering whether the steering wheel is correct. '71 seems a bit too new of a year for that early wheel.

    Yes, and yes — although that B.A.T. car’s cloth panels may be replacements, except for the headrests. Nonetheless, two beautiful examples of the European color schemes! I don’t have an S 57/92 interior photo.

     

    The person I would approach if I wanted to restore such an interior is Lars Gunther, owner of Lars Alpina (forum username @LarsAlpina). Try PMing him. He’s only sporadically on the forum. He does seat restoration in Germany, but I also believe he could help you find the closest match in materials and you could have the upholstering done here. If you don’t hear back from him, please let me know, somewhere I have his email address — I just checked and it wasn’t in my contacts list.

     

    I suspect the two-tone all-vinyl interior (K 68/92) was much rarer than the standard vinyl-and-cloth interior, which most Euro-spec cars received. And I’m going to guess that, today, the perforated gray vinyl is virtually impossible to source. I believe, however, that Lars has located a convincing modern version of the gray cloth. Someone on this forum has recently been working on a similar interior — I can’t recall who at this moment.

     

    (In the BMW upholstery codes, the first number represents the center — pleated — sections of the upholstery and the second number represents the smooth vinyl. Thus, “92” is black smooth vinyl. But that’s the easy part.)

     

    I don’t know when BMW switched to the three-spoke wheel for a Euro-spec cars. For U.S.-spec cars, the two-spoke wheel your car has was superseded in approximately October 1967 to comply with U.S. safety rules that were effective January 1, 1968. Let me look at my sales brochures: I’m betting that the three-spoke steering wheel was also installed on Euro-spec cars in or about 1968 (although I see the Euro-spec ‘69 also has a two-spoke wheel).
