    Model: BMW 2002
    Year: 1972
    Manufactured Date: 06/22/1972
    Original Color: Sahara
    Transmission: 4 Speed Manual
    Current Color: Sahara
    Current Owner: its55
    Location: Tennessee, 37067
    Last Sold: 02/01/2022

    This is a now three owner car.  In 1972 the first owner puchased it new in Sacramento, California and had it for over 46 years.  The second owner in Ohio had it for 3.5 years and I purchased it from him.

    Per BMW Archives is the following:

    "The BMW 2002 US VIN 2583798 was manufactured on June 22nd, 1972 and delivered on June 27th, 1972 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Sahara, paint code 006."

    Optional equipment included on the car at time of purchase (for a total MSRP of $4,048.90) was as follows;

    • Skai Upholstery
    • Heatable rear window and tinted glass
    • Lower reclining front seat
    • Tachometer instead of clock
    • Michelin XAS Radial Tires (one of the originals is allegedly the spare)
    • Torsion bar stabilizers

    At my purchase the odometer shows 15,152.  Actual mileage is unknown.  The second Owner put only approx. 850 miles on the car in 3.5 years.

    The car is all original with no modifications except for the following;

    • The driver side fender was replaced / painted at one time
    • The engine compartment was painted black by the first owner and returned to Sahara by the second owner
    • A radio was installed into the console and the shift knob changed
    • Tires and normal wear / tear items of course

    Congrats! BMW Group Archives will provide the manufacture date if you simply email them the VIN and request the car’s data.

    And how about posting a photo of the original window sticker in the Registry entry?

    Looks like a great find!

    Thanks and regards,

    Thanks Steve!  I sent an email to the BMW Group about a week ago and got a reply that they were not operating currently due to a relocation, however I will try again.  I will add the window sticker to the Registry now as well.

    I emailed BMW Group back in November when my 73 arrived. Received the same auto-reply but then about 3 weeks later received a response with the information.

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

    BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
