When I look at the hood of mine when it is open you can see a faint outline where the air cleaner was rubbing. You would think if you buy the darn adapter from Redline, the air cleaner would fit without having to modify anything.

There just isn't enough height under the hood for the full depth of the oval flange on the underside of the air cleaner. I enjoy slicing them with a cut off wheel on the drill press, but you do need to make a holder to keep it flat on the table. I think I shared those details in that thread.
Other people shared their attachment methods too, but most of those are pretty crude. Bolting it down in the middle doesn't last long. The original design was quite smart and the key is to maintain the best features when modifying it.
The domed center with a nice rounded transition into the carb has got to flow a lot better than having the air make its way over the sharp edges on top of the carb. They call it an air silencer in the manual. It really does eliminate the harsh sucking noise you get with the little Weber filters.
It's too bad we cannot still buy the adaptor like mine. I don't even know who made it. Welding that flange on the backside wasn't a big deal. Setting up to do sand casting seems like an ordeal. It sure would be fun though.
