  1. I'm starting to put back together front suspension on my 68. I'm missing bolt spacers, One long, One short that attach wishbone to sub-frame, Long one goes in sub-frame, Short one is in between subframe and wishbone. Does anybody know where and can get these for both sides?

    Welcome!

VIN 1661550 (VW Jake’s car) was manufactured June 7, 1968, so yours could be the same week, or even the same day. BMW Group Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) will provide the specific manufacturing date and verify the factory color if you just email them the VIN and request their data. Please share it here!

I notice the car has a roll cage. Will it be a track car, street car, or both?

    Please keep us posted.

    Regards,

    Steve

My Nephew was building a track car, This was in his garage for almost 20 years, Just never had the time to finish. I will be putting it on the street, But keeping some suspension he had for it like the Bilstein coil overs, LSD rear and Gertrag 245. As far as roll cage I may pull out if it becomes in my way, I'm not sure. Since I didn't disassemble this car it's going to be fun putting back together although I do have a set of workshop manuals for it.

Only about 2700 or so '68s were made for the US market, as they didn't start arriving here until April '68...what's the VIN--inquiring minds--and VIN junkies--want to know...

Looks like a great, unmolested (and unrusted!) project.  Good score.  Keep us updated.

    Vin is 1661541

  4. Zinz, I live on Central Coast, CA  Paint is OK, But they didn't spray door jambs, Under hood or trunk, Original color is Granada, Since all the under areas are still original paint I may go back to that at some point, At least I don't have to deal with rust, Just minor amount in spare tire well I'll take care of tomorrow. For now I got plenty of mechanics to sort.

  5. I posted I bought this 68 a couple months ago, It took me all that time to round up the Motor, Trans and subframes as they were in different locations, I finally got the car here last night and can start putting back together, I'm sure I'll have some ?'s here along the way but now I can get started.

  6. I'm in the process of doing my 68, I have a garage but it's full of tools, equipment etc. I have a tent outside. Once I get sub-frames in I plan to move it into garage when I need to and back under tent when not working on it and doing as much as possible outside, But all my components are in garage like engine , tranny til I need them. It allows to do all clean engine work in garage and rebuilding stuff indoors. Everything is on carts or stands with wheels so I can easily move it around where I need to.

  7. I had a buddy in the mid 70's trade in his car for a 73 Tii, Sounds great doesn't til you know what he traded, a 56 Porsche speedster which is probably a 500k car now,  I think they only gave him $1000 for it.  I'm still heartbroke over that deal, If I knew he was going to do it I would have bought his speedster all day long

  8. Plasti Dip is the way to go, Easy to touch up and if you don't like it or want to re-do just spray with WD-40 and power wash and it comes right off. If you use it make sure it's warm outside and can has been sitting in sun for a while, Goes on much easier

  9. I wouldn't run car anymore, Drain oil, It's 9 times out of ten head gasket unless car was overheated, You don't wanna run it anymore cause if coolant is sitting in cylinder and you start you may hydraulic a rod, Then you have much bigger headache

  10. No Bondo That I've found, Gonna take a little effort to round everything up and get it to my house, but it's all good. I'm not a newbie at this either, Built dozens of motors foreign and domestic , Just finished restoring old dodge powerwagon which was absolute nightmare so hopefully this will be a little easier. so I plan on doing all myself except the rear Qtr. panel. I know my limitations.

  11. So I went and saw the 68, It's actually much better than I thought, Bodywork and paint is fine except for hood that got dented but replacement is there, and rear was perfect until one of his other cars rolled into it so I'll have to fix that. i purchased it from him now the fun begins. Zero rust car so bodywork is just right rear corner. I bought as project but I think it's farther along than I thought so maybe I can get it up and running in next 6 months. He does have tons of parts so I think I'm at least 90% there, Interior is not bad, It does need headliner and carpets and I'll address dash at some point but it's not horrible. It's been sitting in his garage last 18 years so at least it wasnt outside.

  12. AS for rear end it is old style long neck, He has newer lsd rear for it minus axles. I should add completey trust seller as he is my nephew and has been head mechanic and builder for race teams, Porsche, Audi etc. He's had car long time and was going to build into a track car but life got in the way and just doesnt have the time for it.

  13. I'm new to board , Have ? about a 68 2002 I'm going to see tomorrow.  I know this is probably a tough ? it's about what I should pay for it. It's in pieces, No rust CA car, Does have dent in right rear corner. Bottom end of motor all new forged internals, I'm not sure if he's done head work yet. He has 5 speed tranny for it  , Weber 45's several cams to pick from, all high dollar suspension parts, recaro seats, He says he has everything to put back together with tons of upgrades, Needs carpets, Headliner, Dash is good except for few small cracks. He want's 5k for everything. I should mention he's a german car mechanic and runs a shop. I think it sounds fair but I know you can sink a lot of $ into these cars, I plan on doing all mechanical work myself. Thanks for any help
